Heart Of A Pig.

If it was your last chance of staying alive, would you accept the heart or kidney of a pig? All over the world there are people waiting for transplants of human organs - but there is not enough. The waiting list is long - very long. So for a long time now researchers have been looking at alternatives and there has been some measure of success. On September 23, they transplanted the heart of a pig into a dying man, the next day he was sitting up in bed and cracking jokes. This procedure has been done before but the recipient lived only 2 months. Now just a few days ago a pig's kidney was transplanted into another dying man. Seems like soon enough pigs will be organ donors for humans along with appearing on their dinner table. What do you think? Read all about it in the link. Pig kidney works a record 2 months in donated body, raising hope for animal-human transplants

This is a medical breakthrough and innovation. When you are desperate you think of innovative things. If this works, it's certainly worth a try.

Yes it is worth a try. I am just wondering if the recipient will act any way different.

@Kandae11 that's a good question. If they take o. Some animal traits that would be an unusual side effect.

It's kind of mind boggling that pigs organs can be transplanted into humans. I'm really on the fence about if I would accept a pigs organs to stay alive.

It would take a lot of consideration - by then it might be too late.

I remember the guy who received the pig heart that lived only two months. For people not eligible for a human heart, it seems like the only hope.

I am sure there will be improvements over time. It is just mind boggling to think that an animal's organs could function in the human body , but then the lowly mice are used for research , so....

I think it’s wonderful, but I’m sure PETA will be coming along, complaining about it.

@FourWalls What! , but pigs are already used for human consumption. Pork is a national dish in some countries. Some people roast a whole pig for celebrations.

I don't know... in one way it would just be a "spare part" that's being installed in place of something that was defective... in another way, it's like stealing the pig's life to keep me alive. If I'm dying anyway, I'd probably accept the transplant.

@Kandae11 I eat a lot of pork and I like the heart... well seasoned and on my plate.

@DaddyEvil So , why worry about stealing the pig's life.

But pigs are bred to feed people anyway - that is their life. Some people can't do without their pork. I am not a meat eater and in any event pork is the last l would ever want to eat.

That is very encouraging research. I know pig values have been used for human heart values for a long time.

That shouldn't matter - the rest of it will go to the meat shop where all pigs end up anyway.

I imagine that if I really wanted to continue to live I would accept the organs.

Pig is genetically closest to humans. I think someday, pigs will be organ donors for humans.

This is the second time within 3 months I heard of successful heart transplant from pigs to humans. The issue is, will the humans live long as humans or will they take the lifespan of the pig?

As long as the pig organs help people and the people can handle it, I could never handle having an organ replaced and would rather then end this life,

Most people would give a lot to cling on to life- even for a short while longer. Having an organ replaced is serious surgery.

I know that doctors have been using pig valves on humans for awhile now. I know a few people who have had the surgery and are doing well. As far as the entire heart, I am not sure about that. I would have to pray and think long and hard before making such a decision.
