What's for supper?

Now that I'm no longer working the supper/dinner hour I'm trying to remember some if the meals I made when I was younger absent worked earlier in the day. My husband recently requested shepherd's pie. I found out when looking for recipes online that technically it's called cottage pie when your use hamburger and shepherds pie when your use lamb. I realized that made sense since shepherds tend sheep and lambs not beef. Now maybe I can remember which is which. I do remember that years ago I would cook up the hamburger and I think I put the potato mixture around the outside of the pan with the hamburger and veggies in the middle. The recipe I followed today called for using thyme, rosemary, parsley flakes and onion cooked with the burger. Then adding a bit of flour and tomato paste. Then beef stock, Worcestershire and finally frozen vegetables. Once that was cooked I spread it out in the bottom of my pan. Earlier I cooked the potatoes and mashed them. I added butter, half and half and Parmesan cheese. I was supposed to add garlic powder but only had the salt so didn't use as much. I then spread the potatoes over the meat mixture and baked it to heat it through. It turned out very nice. Now we have leftovers. ~~~~~ I had to get air in my tires earlier. When we went grocery shopping yesterday my tire guage was beyond at me. I have two brand new tires from last March. I'm sure it was the nippy weather that caused it. There was a twenty minute wait. I guess a lot of people had similar pressure issues. Other than that I didn't do much today. I did download quite a few free graphics that I can use for my journals. And, I added up the quarterly taxes from last year and found a discrepancy. Now I need to figure out why. Now meaning maybe tomorrow.

It is a very long time that I do not make a Shepherd's Pie, we both liked a lot the one with lamb.

@MarshaMusselman I think that the British serve lamb with mint jelly. We prepare lamb in a different way.

@LadyDuck the person having it served might have had ancestors from Germany but I don't remember anymore.

If I've ever had lamb it wasn't since the mid eighties, so I don't remember what it tasted like or if I liked it. Isn't it lamb that is served with mint jelly? I know that was on the tables.

Your cottage pie looks good. I'm glad you got air in your tires.

My husband was worried that with the cold they might go flat in one day. I would be surprised if it happened that fast but I didn't want to take any chances.

So am I. Might as well get it over with since the temps won't start too warm up until the weekend. Did your stay warm enough to do your errands yesterday?

Ah, then I guess I've only made "cottage pie"! Your dinner looks tasty there. We had shrimp and vegetable stir fry with rice last night. It's not even as cold here, but that's what happens to my tires on cold days too.

It seems like you've been pretty busy. We mostly called cottage/shepherd's pie potato pie. I always enjoy it.

Do you make it much? Yesterday wasn't so busy other than cooking the meal and the stuff I did in my last paragraph but that didn't take very long. Unfortunately, I'm a procrastinator so everything doesn't get done as far as it should work all the free time I have right now. I hope I get more done today with my husband at work, but I got a slow start because I woke up dizzy. I know why but it lasted longer today than it did yesterday. I started using a nasal spray, again, and in a few days that should eliminate the dizziness.

@JudyEv I was better after about two hours. I thought it was due to my eustachian tube being blocked from drainage which I get from time to time. Once I start using my nasal spray it's better in a few days. But my husband heard at work that others have been dizzy too. I found out a nano virus also has those symptoms. So now I don't know the cause. I should call my doctor to ask if it's the virus whether the dizziness lasts most of the day or is it periodic.

@MarshaMusselman We have potato pie from time to time - maybe once or twice a month. Being dizzy is awful. It really restricts what you can do.

Shepherd's pie is very good, and I have always called it that even though I have never used lamb to make it. I make mine a little different, but not much different. For example, the mashed potato mixture is put completely on top covering all the ingredients below it, and I usually sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the potatoes. Either way it is made it is always very good. For dinner last night I had braised pork steaks with stuffing and salad on the side.

Tonight I'm planning on doing pork blade steaks. I've no idea how to braise something. We'll probably have baked potatoes with it. I did or the potato mixture over the hamburger and veggies. I just forgot to take a pic of that so showed it in my bowl. The potatoes had Parmesan cheese in them but I should have sprinkled some shredded cheese on top.

@MarshaMusselman Braising is super easy. It's just cooking something in liquid. Fully immersed is stewing, partially immersed is braising. The meat comes out like butter.

That’s interesting it’s called Shepards pie when using lamb and cottage pie when using hamburger. I’ve never heard that before nor heard it called cottage pie. I did made it once though using beef I believe. I’m sorry the information on the taxes is wrong I hope it isn’t to hard to figure out!

If I would just sit down in front of my computer and do it in sure I can figure it out. I've heard before that lamb was used in shepherds pie but never could remember why.
