Allergic Reaction

Have you ever had an allergic reaction to anything out of the blue? I know a lot of people have tests that reveal their allergies, and then some people find out the hard way. Last night, I lit a new candle, sat down to watch television, and relaxed. About three minutes later, my arms started to itch, then my legs. They started to get pink, and that started the scratching. It wasn’t too long after that, that I glanced accusingly at that candle. I blew it out, and about five minutes later, the itching stopped. I’m relieved I didn’t spend money on it or I would have been very disappointed. Other than the usual mold, pollen, and such, I’ve never had allergies to anything. What about you guys? Any unfortunate allergic reactions?

It's not uncommon to grow into an allergy. Your body has to build up to so over time as you have more contract with it you get to the point where your body can't handle it anymore and then you have a reaction. Sometimes we have small ones that are not noticeable because we think of other causes. Such as being dizzy, headaches even a tummy ach are allergic reactions but can be of other causes too. Same with running noses. Sometimes we don't know till we have hit our limits. Also knowing family medical history. Your morning is likely to have allergies if your parents do more so in the areas of food and medical allergies. Some reactions are just one-and-done and never happen again probably because of cross-contamination.

I wouldn’t have thought being dizzy would have been an indication of an allergy in some cases. That’s interesting.

@ShyBear88 Your nine year old must really have to watch out because those sound like miserable symptoms.

@AmbiePam There are a lot of signs of allergies but like I said they are also common signs of other things so a lot of times people just miss reading them till their allergies have other signs. My 9-year-old his signs for his food allergies are headaches, stomach aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and his eczema will flare up

I can't have anything like a scented candle or a plug in room deodorizer in our home. Both Jay and I start coughing, until the item we're allergic too is gone. I love flowers, but only outdoors. Cut flowers are beautiful, but I can't bring them indoors. Again, I get sick until they're taken outside. It's a part of my allergies that I don't understand, but they are definitely real! I'm glad you discovered what was making you itch:) xo

I do remember you talking about Jay’s allergies once. He’s really allergic to dogs, right?

None that I recollect really. I used to have hay fever when I was young. I have been using some cheapo detergent which I think I might be mildly allergic to but it isn't causing a big reaction. I wonder what was in the candle that caused you to be allergic to it?

I couldn’t find an ingredient list in the product page so the only clue is the lilac. Whatever makes it “soft cashmere” is probably the culprit though. I’ll see if anyone else wants it because it smells amazing, and I hate to waste it. Of course, I’ll warn them of my reaction, just in case.

@snowy22315 My sister really wanted to try it. I’d feel better about her trying it than anyone else.

I have not come into contact with anything new that has caused an allergic reaction on me, but my hubs has. He is very sensitive, especially to things that he ingests. I am hoping that this was not the really expensive candle that you wrote about a while ago.

No, thankfully not. I checked the price it lists, and this one is $25. I wouldn’t pay that for any candle, but I’m really glad I didn’t pay it for one that gave me this reaction. I’ve never in my life itched that bad. Did your husband have one of those extensive allergy tests years ago?

@AmbiePam our allergy tests are free because of our healthcare system. He hasn't had any allergy testing done. I had some done when I was a teenager, it indicated allergies to molds and birch trees. An odd combination. I believe that I have some intolerances, some scents and some foods.

I am allergic to soap. My hands were red when I used it. I changed it and now I don't have problems. Candles make me feel very uncomfortable. It's like they have some toxic substances. I can't use candles or room deodorizers.

As long as the candles are soy, they don’t bother me. If they aren’t soy, they aren’t very good. The soap issue must have been very problematic. I’m allergic to something in the water in my apartment. I haven’t been able to shower without it breaking me into a rash. It’s been 14 years now, but ten since I realized the water was the problem, and not a product I use.

I haven't really had scents that bothered me, which is good as I am allergic to too many things. The main one being watch what I eat to be sure that someone/anyone/anywhere has not dumped ''just a tiny bit, you'll never taste it'' hot peppers of any kind, shredded or chopped or powdered or whole, into my food. If I eat them, my throat will close and there I am at the ER again. Too much cumin in a dish can do it, as well as just the spice that says ''red pepper flakes'' as I tried that, they weren't supposed to be hot but they were. I can eat regular bell peppers, and those tiny sweet peppers. That's it. Not trying to be negative in any way, but as we grow older I think some of us have more reactions to things than others.

I had a reaction to this Korean rice cake dessert! This fellow mom gave me a sample of it . . . I've eaten the Japanese one throughout life, but I've never had this one which had nuts and "things" on top. By that evening, I started getting welts on my chest and arms (apparently that could be a sign of food allergy) . . . I looked like a map of continents ! I'm normally not allergic to nuts, but I have no idea what all the other "things" were on that rice cake . . . so til this day I have no idea what exactly caused it.

@AmbiePam I think I ended up doing nothing . . . just drinking a lot of water and riding it out . That happened to a friend who suddenly was allergic to strawberry when she wasn't before . . . her welts went away eventually - so I did the same. Yah, I know I live dangerously .

I kept it in case someone else wanted it. It really did smell amazing. Of course, I’m assuming someone else won’t have the same unfortunate reaction…

This is weird, surely allergic to some ingredients they used for the scent. I am allergic to peanuts, I must be very careful.

I have pollen allergies, but that's about it. I had a bad early experience with lobster, and still can't eat it.

That's sad that you were allergic to that candle. It sounds like it would smell good. Yeah some wax melts would cause me to tear up if I leave them on for a long time.

When I was a kid if I ate strawberries or tomatoes I would break out in hives. Doctor said I would probably grow out of it and I have. I love strawberries, but don't care for eating tomatoes. I love tomato-based foods, ketchup, spaghetti sauce and such, but a tomato sandwich or on a hamburger, nope.

I'm allergic to sulphur but occasionally I'll eeat something then come out in welts and itch like crazy. I should really do some of those tests to find out what it is that I'm allergic too. It's good that you came good once you blew the candle out.

I don't know if it's an allergic reaction; but certain perfumes stuff me up and make me cough. Same goes for anything really strong smelling. I had a bad reaction to one of the antibiotics I took one time. Other than that, nothing. Have a good day.
