Short story: Prayer of the heart, connects us to God, whereas prayer of the mind disconnects us, when we stay in our mind alone

John loved the trees in the forest nearby but sometimes he could not see the wood for the trees

John Staurton, was a religious person, who loved to pray to God. John liked to pray outside, and as there was bushland, pretty well next to where he lived, he would make the ten minute walk there, and sit on the ground, leaning against a large tree, and pray. John was hoping that from all of his prayers to God, God would actually talk back to him, one day. One day, John was again seated at his favourite tree, praying to God, when he felt someone tapping him on his shoulder. John's eyes were closed as he prayed, so he could not see who this was, without his opening his eyes. Then, he heard a voice both inside his head, and outside his head too, telling him to open his eyes, and to greet this stranger. John opened his eyes, but there was nobody there. John looked at a twig on the ground next to him, and he laughed to himself softly. It must have been that branch falling onto his shoulder, which made him think that somebody was tapping him on his shoulder. John went back to praying, and after a good ten minutes more, John felt somebody this time, shaking him by both shoulders. "This could not be twigs this time," he thought to himself, as he opened his eyes again, only to see that nobody was there again this time too. What John did not know was that he had had a heart attack, and died, while leaning against that tree. It was his time to be called home to God. This was God shaking him, and tapping him, on his shoulder. John did not need to wait for God to answer him during a prayer; here was God come to get him at his death. God is always nearby us, and we should trust his nearness, whether he answers us verbally, or not. Here, God came to collect John's soul, at his death, but John, not aware of his death, could not see God yet, with his soul eyes. He was still in his mind, which takes an amount of time to dissolve itself when we die. John eventually saw God there, as God, reached into John and disconnected him from his mind, and so his soul eyes saw God, and so he went with God, into the next phase of his soul's life, in Heaven. Prayer can open our soul eyes to see God right now, and we do not need to wait until our death to do so. In some prayers, we need less of our mind talking, and more of our soul listening, and then we will hear God, as he whispers his truths to us, during our prayer sessions with him. To truly listen, we need faith of the heart, not faith of our mind alone. Real love can only ever come from our heart too, and never can it come as a thought from our mind. Love is an energy in action, not a thought, being thought. We must love, as well as see. Loving allows us to see more than our mind alone, ever can do so.

Yes, we can sometimes pray better, when we connect to nature, and to God, in such a peaceful setting in nature. It creates a prayerful setting for us.

The world today makes it so hard to keep God connected.

Yes, that is why we should all try and go out into nature, to connect to it, and to feel a reverence still to God, as its creator. The world, does all it can to disconnect us from God, with all of the troubles it brings to us these days. We should still try to step past the world and to step into God though, as otherwise, we are overcome by evil, and neglect living from love too.

John was lucky he got to go home to heaven. Praying anywhere is good.

Yes, prayer can be done almost anywhere, but the surrounding atmosphere does help us hold a sense of reference, when it is a peaceful place. John's sincere life of prayer, and his ongoing relationship to God, got him into Heaven.

Staying connected with the creator and seeking his blessings gives us peace of mind through making the right choices. A love-filled life gives us fulfillment and meaning all through our existence.

A certain peace of the heart is felt through connection to God too, which to my mind, is stronger than any peace of the mind, which, in my case, still struggles amidst doubts, and non peaceful existence too. Our heart knows and feels what our mind can never know, or feel, and peace, deep peace, is never of the mind alone. The making of right choices can be influenced by both our hearts, and our minds.

@innertalks The Heart tells us we are here for the long haul while the mind reflects the impermanence of existence. Our heart prompts us we are all one, part of our creator and the entire creation while the mind is influenced by the division and selfishness of our physical world. No wonder the heart soothes us while the mind keeps us on tenterhooks.

@Shiva49 Yes, love always soothes, and thoughts usually prod us as barbs in our flesh. Our mind pricks us awake at times, with its incoming new ideas, and fresh looks at things, when it heeds the intuitional nudges coming into it from its soul.

I feel extremely disconnected from God. I have so many doubts and despair and I wonder if He really exists.

Feeling disconnected from God depresses me more, as having God in my thoughts, and life still, still gives me a connection to a hope that all might be better one day, and that there is some method still behind the greater madness of the world. I would rather think that God exists, than give up thinking this, and live on my own, a desperate life of no-meaning, and lack of purpose, and direction, and of despair, and negativity, about the state of the world.
