Supreme Court of India wants to make people who feed stray dogs liable

I was surprised when I read this. People who feed stray dogs do so because they can spare some while others cannot. If these dogs are not fed, they could become too hungry and then resort to attacking babies. This means, those who feed stray dogs are actually indirectly protecting babies. But the flip side is, dogs become territorial. Their food is guaranteed to some extent. So they don't want to be dislodged from that place. People naturally shoo stray dogs. It obviously does not go down with the dogs as their food prospects are disturbed. They may attack people wanting to send them away. So does it make people who feed the dogs liable for vaccinating those dogs? And for those bites? All I can say is, how you react with the animal, the animal reacts with you. The stray dogs have never been nasty with me, either in the past, or now when I am finding some time to feed them. They have never barked at me. They follow me, for some strange reason. Not always but sometimes. I quite like them approaching me, its so child like or lamb like. The pleasure of feeding them is something I cannot describe. Concerns are definitely there, but where will these homeless creatures go? Government does not have any place for them.

Instead of being so harsh to dogs the government can make shelter homes for them arrange for their vaccination instead of accusing people who feed stray dogs. We in our residential area too feed them which has prevented theft in our colony.

Not only thefts. It won't be easy for many crimes to occur. Like rapes and bomb planting.

@vandana7 You are right. When we feed stray dogs they start protecting the area.

We have a different mindset here I guess. Stray dogs are taken off the streets and rehomed or, if that isn't possible after some time, they are put down.

I am not ok with putting them down or for that anybody except human beings who wish to be put down for valid reasons - everybody has wish to live. We don't see younger pups any more. It means the dogs have been systematically neutered. How long can the existing ones be around? 5 years, 10 years?

@vandana7 At least neutering the dogs is a good start.

They wouldn’t get away with that here, but then I doubt we have the same problems with strays here. In the United States, the organization of PETA has a lot of sway. Don’t get me wrong, we have too many strays, but you encounter a huge amount of stray dogs when you go out. It is rare for me to see many at all. Although, my best friend sees much more because she lives in the country, and people dump strays in the country. She’s saved many over the years. She’s been scolded by the city for keeping too many, but it’s not like they can storm her property and demand anything from her. Knowing her, she’d fire her rifle in the air with a warning shot. (That’s a slight exaggeration. She saves her rifle for the rattlesnakes and rabid animals.

Let me assess. At a distance of about 250 steps from my building (not my house), there are 6 stray dogs. They were not there last year. This year people have started dumping waste at a corner here. So the strays look for food there. One of them is my favorite but I have never discriminated. He follows me to the grocery shop like my protector. Then at a distance of about 700 feet from our building is a white dog who was abandoned by his master for whatever reason. The guy is not old, but still has his fur and looks healthy enough. He tries to come to me, wants me to pet him on his head and neck...when I give him biscuits, he looks straight in my eye, I don't need your food, type of dog. Then at a distance of about 1200 feet is Roxy. I gave her that name. She responds. She too likes to follow me around. There are two more not very far from Roxy's place. In addition, there are three more ...the now you see, now you don't dogs. That is all the pack. The two near Roxy are the barking variety. Rest are pretty docile, except one of the dogs that is at 250 feet.

All animals are manifestations of God. When you feed a hungry animal, you embrace God. It is as simple as that.

I don't know Pony ji. They are so sincere that I feel bad to be a human being. I feel we are ungrateful cheats. We have stolen their world, and we have abandoned them.

Stray dogs here are brought to the shelter and are hopefully adopted if they can't find an owner. While it is very good that you feed the strays, they need to be spayed and neutered, vaccinated and otherwise taken care of. It can only lead to more puppies and more strays as it is.

They are definitely neutered. I don't see any dog pups around anymore. Not seen any since what...four or five years or even more.

I need a solution for this because 3 of the 11 dogs I feed are barking type. I also need to think of how to feed these dogs in rainy season which is just about 45 days or so away.
