What should I use to fire up a 14-year-old guitar student who learns well but rarely smiles?

She has been my guitar student since she was 12. She has learned her scales and chords well, and we've worked on a few songs together, including John Prine's Paradise. She can even do a jazz progression I taught her, and play the proper scales over it when I do the chords. But she rarely smiles, and I can't really tell which songs "fire her up." She is cute as a button, but seems to have very little "silly" in her. Maybe it's because she is of Russian extraction. I don't know. Are Russian people often "serious"? In any case, I had a brain storm as I was writing this. I set Robert Frost's poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, to music many years ago while on the throne on a -20 F night in Iowa. Perhaps I'll try that one on her (and a couple of other students) today. The melody is simple and straightforward, and the poem is lovely and not inappropriate for a younger student. Do you know the poem? It was one of my favorite short poems in my "book learnin'" days.

In Russian communication, it is not acceptable to smile at strangers. Russians do not smile much, but this does not mean that they do not like you. Russian mentality "only a fool smiles for no reason". Accept her as she is.

Thank you. That has been my approach. Cultural differences in nonverbal communication are interesting to me. I read that in many Asian cultures, eye-contact can be seen as invasive. But my Asian students at the College say that's not the case so much any more. Maybe I'll do a post about it and see what our Asian MyLotters have to say.

@TheHorse - May be that those born outside Asia do not feel so much their culture as the previous generations. If you look at photos of Russian athletes, they never smile at the camera.

@LadyDuck I have seen my young student smile maybe five times. But it was brief.

Now it is not appropriate to "tickle" a student.

@TheHorse Nowadays, you can´t even whistle at a beaufiful girl. Yet there are lots of people who should be in prison and aren´t.

I am a white male. I would probably wind up in prison if I tickled her.

I know the poem and have always liked it. Would it help to ask her to come up with a couple of tunes that she'd like to learn. And yes, I think Russians often seem to be very serious.

I asked her again today. I have asked her many times. We did some work on the poem. And we practiced the Jesse Winchester song I have taught her. I'll link it.

@JudyEv Jesse Winchester was my folk idol in the early 70s.

I almost never smile, but that doesn't mean I'm not happy. It's just my face. Maybe it's like that for her too.

Actually, I don't smile that much, though people say my eyes do. I can have a dark sense of humor sometimes.

Yes, I think that Russians are serious. I am serious too. I don't think this is a problem. Some people smile a lot and others are serious.

Tell her a joke or try to do a wacky face while singing a sad song in that way maybe she laughs at loud
