I´ll see if there are small houses in my neighborhood.

I am starting conversations with a young lady who sells houses. But I have to go and check at least a couple of houses before I decide what to buy. I talked with my brother about all this the day he came for dinner and he reminded me that old houses needed a lot a remodeling that meant extra money. I had forgotten that houses built many decades ago, had lesser needs in electricity. Now there are lots of electric gadgets. In Dixie´s house, even though they remodeled the apartment after they bought it, they forgot this and Dixie cannot machine wash and dry clothes. So now I´ll check again what the lady sent me and I might go and see smaller ones with my brother too. Next week I hope that I´ll have all this more clear. I´ll tell you as soon as I know more.

It's smart to look at smaller homes. Less to keep warm in the winter, less to care for and have to clean. We gutted and remodeled a 120 year old home once. It took forever, as we did most of the work ourselves. And as you said, we had to completely rewire and re-plumb the entire house--it still had the old knob-and-strand type of wiring, which is extremely old and not safe, so it had to go. We added a lot of outlets, etc. to support today's needs. It wasn't cheap, even with doing all the work ourselves. If it's smaller, it shouldn't cost as much, and you should have money left over. Hopefully you can have a home that's warmer in the wintertime. It's hard on a person to be cold!

If I can remodel a small house I might have enough money to spend more in heating. In the house where I live now, the heat in the living room heater goes mostly to the second floor.

@marguicha That makes sense...warm air rises, cold air sinks. Yes, getting yourself the best, affordable heating system you can is important. It's just hard to do anything when you get completely chilled and can't get warm.

@MarieCoyle My first floor has a lot of unused room now that I won´t have parties. So if I find a one story house as big as my first floor, I can turn what is now my living room into a very big library for my books.

Solar panels are expensive and I´m too old to spend that amount of money in a house for me.

@kaylachan I´d do it if I was your age. But I´ll be 80 next year. If I spend too much I won´t have money left to have any kind of fun while I´m alive.
