Even the youngsters couldn’t help me

Yesterday afternoon I was working at a business event and the whole organisation were super security conscious. You couldn’t leave the foyer without a security pass, meaning that as temporary staff we had to be given cards to open the doors to allow guests into the lecture theatre or even the toilet! In order to be issued with said pass, we had to log in using a QR code. I said ‘OK, I’ve never actually scanned a QR code, how do I do it?’ and everyone laughed and exclaimed over my lack of technical know-how. I asked didn’t I need to have some sort of scanning app or something? And they said oh no, just point your phone camera at it, so I did as I was told and, as I expected, the camera just focused nicely on the QR code. If I touched the ‘button’ then of course I got a nice photo of the QR code. There were six of us in the group, three middle-aged people (myself included) and three youngsters of 24 or under. None of them were able to solve my problem and eventually someone else just had to log in for me. The other really funny thing was that, at an event about the future role of technology in work, the automated ticketing system didn’t work properly. One fifth of the attendees were not logged on the system and instead we had to write their names on a note-pad with a pen in the old-fashioned way. How ironic was that! I understand your dilemma with the QR code. I tried it a couple of days ago with the same results you got. Yes, it is ironic that a technology conference wouldn't have the technology working properly.

At least it made people smile as I scribbled their names down!

I am leery of QR codes. I don't understand them and now I heard that there is some kind of scam connected to them. I wish people would not be dismissive of people not up on technology. It is difficult to learn when you are older, never had a computer in school, or a lesson, ever. We have to learn everything by trial and error, mostly error.

I don't know how to do QR codes, either, and up until just over 14 months ago, I didn't even have a cell phone.

You just scan it into your camera. Be very careful.

@Fleura It is supposed to load something, but I'm unsure how that works.

Well, now I am really relieved, I am not the only one having problems with the QR codes.

@Fleura Absolutely not, I am very good with computers, but I totally dislike smartphones and I did exactly the same as you did with a QR code, I took a photo.

I remember the first time I scanned a QR using a camera, and it would take us to a shortened link.
