How Am I Going to Travel?

I haven't flown in about 50 years. I never thought much about it while in flight. The only time I got a little nervous was when I was riding in a 6 passenger plane. The pilot did a lot of swaying the plane from one side to the other and that was nerve-wracking. But, lately, I have been thinking about my dream trip. If I were to travel again that is which is rather doubtful. I would like to take a train to New Orleans. But recently I have heard about several collisions and head-on collisions of trains. Not all here in the U.S. but still scary. So, if not by train how would I travel? The only data I could find was from 2021. It says that there were 1,627 train accidents both with passenger and cargo trains. There were 8 fatalities and 118 injured. Hmm! Have you had any experience riding trains?

It is still less dangerous to travel by air than by car. Less accidents and less fatalities. Trains are fun...I have taken many Amtrak trips. Short ones to Chicago, long ones like the City Of New Orleans from Chicago or here to New Orleans...rode Amtrak to the west coast, to Montana from Chicago, to New York...it's a long trip. Sometimes, there are delays. Sometimes, there is a crying child or an unhappy baby and you can't sleep. Sometimes you would give anything to just get off the train for a little while and take a walk. And then, there is something spectacular to see and you are just glad to be right where you are, not the driver, just the observer. I do have to say that for long distances, it is more expensive to travel by train than it is by air.

I find that true. You never know who else will be aboard. I am not sure I could fly again.

@MarieCoyle .......I would like to do a river cruise or road trip. Nice to go slow and see the sights. Flying is the cheap way to travel but I need to get over my nervousness. And the kids are nervous about it too. My dream trip would be by train to New Orleans. Stay there for a few days and then travel up to Michigan where I would take a ferry out to Macinack Island to stay at the Grand Hotel and see where Somewhere in Time was filmed. I have wanted to go there for years. I probably never will get to see it though. It would sure be a trip. New Orleans is such an interesting place too.

@celticeagle I like road trips at times, so I can enjoy the ride. But I also appreciate flying when the need is there and you can get where you need to go in very short order. Also, it is usually cheaper to fly than it is to drive, eat out, stay in a hotel, and pay for the gas.

I would love to travel by train; however, not as long as Amtrak is our only option.

I sure like the idea. Get up and go up to the observation deck and look out. I'd love it! They might have to carry me off the train when we arrive.

@celticeagle — I’d love it, too. I’m just afraid of being in the middle of nowhere and an announcement comes on: “Because there’s no budget we cannot continue to operate this train. Good luck in getting to Denver.”

One of the huge gains that came with my move was living about a mile from a train depot. Before our move I hadn't ridden a train in years. Last year I rode the train along the coast north to visit one of my sisters. I loved just sitting and staring out at the lovely coast, not worrying about driving in heavy traffic. Very pleasant experience. Daughter rode from Arizona to us- that about wore her out but she isn't into all the stuff you have to do at airports.

We have a love train depot here in Boise. A few years ago they shut it down and you have to go to another town if you want to go to the depot. So sad. Did you read my post I wrote about when I traveled on the train to see a friend and the train folks thought I wasn't able to walk because there was a wheelchair behind where I had seated? They brought me water and kept asking me if I needed anything. No heavy traffic would be wonderful. We'd be going to New Orleans and then up to Michigan to go to Mackinac Island where Somewhere in Time was filmed. That is my dream trip.

@celticeagle Boise is pretty big so I find it weird that the train depot was shut down. My hubby and I went to New Orleans once and mostly wasn't impressed. We liked Charleston and Beauford a lot more. We did enjoy the swamp tour in New Orleans, though

Our family didn't have a car until I was 18 years old. We did all of our travel by train and bus. I don't like to fly; but I probably would take a plane. Have a good day.

Planes seem to be the common way to travel. You have a good day too.

I often take high-speed trains and occasionally ordinary trains. In my country, I hardly worry about the small probability of train collisions. Although we have also experienced train derailment accidents here.

I experienced riding trains back in Singapore and in Manila, Philippines. It was great. I tend to make myself enjoy the surroundings and whatever activity that I can do when riding on it just so I won't start overthinking on some things.

@celticeagle To guarantee a safe trip, I usually do a lot of research in which the company itself is involved with their transportation vehicles. Just to see if there are any recorded incidents in which any of their transportation vehicles are involved.

I guess bus is a safe choice,i haven't flown,but i have taken a train a few times.That's a long and boring journey,with the sleepy and tired body,i really don't like that.

I don't think I'd like the bus. I need to be able to get up and move around. I'd blow up the bathroom and be kicked off a bus.
