Watching TV. Do we belong to different species?

I am half watching a show about people who are obese. They weight around 600 pounds and most of them are very young. But what worries me more is that when their families are shown on TV, every single member is overweighed. And their way of eating is usually grosse. None of them will reach an old age, as far as I can imagine. I watch while I mylot and they buy lots of pizzas and breaded pieces of chicken. Did I tell you what happened when I went to the US and my friend Marcela had bought breaded chicken for me and told me to heat it while she was working? When I looked at the oven, they were all in a pool of fat. I had to take them out carefully, take off all the bread and oil with a paper towel and eat just enough so as to stay away from hunger. I have some kilos more that I put on after I quit smoking. It is false that your metabolism changes. I coped with anxiety the first month eating lots of hard candy. I destroyed my teeth and went up over 20 pounds. I lost part of it when I was in the hospital. Again, it was not my illness but the horrible meals they served that the hospital. I lived for a week on jello and pineapple ice cream. Unfortunatly, at my age, when you lose weight your skin stays loose. But it is never like those poor people I watch on TV. I still have a picture of Coral and myself in Aruba and I´m quite happy with it, considering that I was 74 or 75. Yet, it seems that in the US people have to work with no help until they die unless they are rich. Please tell me if I´m wrong. I could not have my house clean without Anita. And now I need a gardener. I am sure that fast food is the cause of most problems in the world. Camila is how selling honey and I wanted to help her sell it. But almost all my friends have diabetes. It is a shame. Now it is time to work a bit. See you later.

You can be thin and be poor in America. Yes, junk food is much easier to afford, but there are many other reasons for obesity. TV takes the worst of things and makes shows about it. First, unhealthy habits are everywhere. People are busy, and want fast. MEDICINE is a big one. So many medicines, including almost every antidepressant, increases appetite and causes weight gain. Unless you live near public transplant, you are not walking, but driving. PE in schools is being cut due to lack of money in schools. Video games are keeping kids stationary, and emotional eating is a real problem for a heck of a lot of people. But yes, healthy food is more expensive. That may be a reason for being 20 pounds overweight, but not so huge one is 600 pounds or close to it.

Even the cruddy snacks are expensive now, @AmbiePam. Chip bags are downsized and the price increased. The combo of fat and sugar is quite addictive. Its a huge ugly cycle for sure.

@sallypup Yes, absolutely. Inflation has made everything more expensive. Ramen noodles are still relatively cheap, but inflation still got them too! And the salt content for those noodles will make the heart palpitate.

@marguicha We have a dollar menu at almost every fast food restaurant in America. I can have a burger and fries for $2. That’s cheap. Butter is expensive here!

@HaruLoid It's very true. Homecooked meals are always tastier.

They make shows out of the extreme. It is always cheaper and healthier to cook at home. Just sadly many people don't have the time. Others have never learned how to cook

Many people in the US are fat and many eat a lot of fast food. For me on a tight budget, I don't remember when I last had fast food, Sure my food mostly consists of frozen items I heat up but at least I have food. I am not very fat nor am I very thin, I consider myself pleasantly plump. Today I had some meatballs with gravy and mashed potatoes and for dessert an ice cream sandwich and a Hostess cupcake, That was enough for me. Even I cannot understand how someone can reach 600 pounds.

I don´t understand how people can eat several pizzas or burgers at the same time. Or how is it that they have the money to pay for them.

I gained most of my weight since I am disabled and can't get around much. I really don't eat that much; but I don't get any exercise. As far as retiring goes, my husband and I planned many years in advance; and now we are comfortable in our retirement. We don't have to work. We are in the US. Have a good weekend.

There have been countless of articles specifically stating an increase in obesity. Maybe it is time to instill good health and healthy food in our education systems. Teach kids, as early as possible, about health. Help them become more aware. Also, giving them awareness of it may cause them to act on helping their parents, friends and relatives in losing some weight.

People now eat a lot more sugar than what they did when I was a child. And plays are more sedentary.

@HaruLoid A couple of decades ago I went to Disneyworld. The park was full of beautiful thin blond children with overweight blond parents who were young and would be beautiful too with many pounds less. Whenever you looked at someone with a nice body, they were brunette and were talking in Spanish. But we are being colonized by fast food chains. The new generations have, in general, more weight than their parents.

I am careful when I shop for food. There are aisles and aisles filled with junk fake food and sweets. I have hired help with gardening and have hired help with housecleaning.

I spend a very reasonable amount in eating very well if I cook from scratch. That way I can afford Anita to help me with some housework I can´t do.
