A rice heating pad

Years ago I made a rice heating pad and it worked well until it started to fray and I had rice coming out. They're really easy to make, some of you probably have them, and they're so inexpensive to make compared to ones from Amazon. The pad with the enclosed rice gets heated in the microwave and to me are much more comfy than the electric ones. So, with all these hurting places on me, I decided to make a new one. It's just a rectangle of cloth that's filled with uncooked rice. This one was seven straight lines stitched with my sewing machine. How hard could that be, right? That heating pad is the ugliest thing I've ever made. I don't know what happened! I've sewed different things over the years, I sewed a pretty little dress for our daughter's first birthday, I researched and made a dress for my China head doll like the style in Illinois around the mid 1800's. I've made Christmas stockings for all the kids and grandkids. So it's not like I can't sew seven straight lines! Well, apparently not. But actually this has been a bad chemo brain day. Several times I was so foggy. Maybe I'll use that as my "excuse."

I used to make clothes for my boys when they were small but I'm battling to sew a straight line nowadays.

@1creekgirl I always take comfort from the fact that my crochet is good.

As long as the rice pad works, never mind the straight lines. I had a rice pad for many years until, like yours, the material disolved. I then decided to buy one because I was lazy. It had aromatic seeds instead of rice and the odor was terrible. Fortunatly the cloth was very bad too and it broke down soon. I would not have dared thrown away something useful. So I made a rice pad with my hands and I love it. I did not even spend on the cloth.

@1creekgirl The cloth of the bought heating pad was bad AND ugly. I used a piece of an old sheet. They are strong in the borders.

You were very wise. I used a dish cloth this time and so far it works, even if it is ugly!

Well, I was just going to say, you might be having a bad day. You're human and it's allowed.

@1creekgirl I would say a bad chemo brain day is a good excuse. I am not good at sewing or own a machine.

Thanks, Linda. Still praying for you all. How's your knee? It's probably gotten pushed down the list with everything else you're going through.

@LindaOHio Dale's better, but I hurt so much all over. Hoping to get lab reports soon, then have a bone scan this week and a mammogram next week. My Oncologist is very thorough. Any further news from the insurance people? You have so much on you, but you and your husband are blessed to have each other.

@1creekgirl Yes, I cancelled my appointment with orthopedics. If I'm really careful, it doesn't hurt much at all. I couldn't possibly get the surgery done since I will be trying to care for my husband when he gets home. How are you and your hubby doing? Have a good week.

We use old tube socks. Sew across the toe if there is a hole. Fill with rice. Sew across the cuff, or tie it with a shoe lace. These are good on the neck, too. I have seen online where they make small ones to hold in your hands and I may make a couple of those to deal with my arthritic thumbs.

No excuse ma’am, those are real reasons! I just came across a heating pad like you’re describing I got from a craft store. They are really nice to have around.

I like that they're softer and better at wrapping around wherever they're needed.

As long as it's good enough to keep the rice in it do not mind if it's not as pretty as those you used to make.

This is the first time I heard about rice heating pad. I used to sew my sons’ pants when he was still in the elementary school but stopped it when he told me that he wanted to have Levi pants like his schoolmates

That's funny about your son's comment! You can find those rice heating pads on Amazon if you're interested.
