Magazines are going the way of newspapers?

Most of us who used to have a habit of reading the newspaper have given it up, at least most of the people I know. One lady has a paper delivered daily here, just one. The internet has overtaken most of the newspapers. Oh, I used to really love reading the Sunday paper. Not anymore. I refuse to pay the wild price for a paper that is about 1/4 the size it was a few years ago. I can read the news online, or flick on a news station, for a lot less. Today, my daughter and I browsed our local Barnes and Noble. We both love to look at the new books and have a coffee there, it's fun to browse. We each had a gift card today. I hadn't looked at the magazine section in years, I stopped looking at them when they got so pricey. Come to find out, the previous prices were just a warm-up. Tons and tons of wonderful magazines of every subject you could possibly think of, hobbies, cars, children, you name it, they have it. And some of those magazines are $19.99 to $29.99!!!! Do people actually buy these magazines at these prices?

Books and magazines are very expensive here. It seems that the next generation will be only reading books online.

We have some used book stores, the books can be very cheap. Then we have one that you can turn your books in and get some credit towards other books, which I really like to do.

Books are also becoming expensive. I gave up buying magazines, but I am sorry for books. I do not like "digital books", I like paper books only.

@MarieCoyle - All our small towns have converted the old phone booths into small "free libraries". We can bring there up to 3 books and get 3 books in exchange. I bring the books we bought that are no more interesting and I have a good choice.

@LadyDuck We have some of those in certain places as well, but not made out of old phone booths, as they have been gone for years. They are a good thing. More of them were built during the first year of the pandemic, and very well received.

I prefer a real book as well, Anna. I have several friends who read a lot of books, and we swap back and forth all the time. It saves money and we talk about the books and get ideas of what we like, and so forth. Often we buy used books at thrift stores, which can be .25-.50 cents per book. I have one place not far from my home that has them always for .25 cents. They have very nice choices, I know I am fortunate to have that so near me. I get my son books from there at times, too.

@MarieCoyle I get the free Missouri Conservationist that is about Missouri wildlife. I get a free one from AAA about places to go and things to see. And I get a free semi-adult mag that honestly does have good articles in it.

I used to have a few subscriptions to magazines, but I'm talking years and years ago. I don't anymore.

Well, I don't care if I never read an article about a movie star or whoever. But some people evidently do, there are a lot of celebrity worshippers out there.

Those specialty magazines really are high priced. I keep reading the New Yorker, but only when they offer me a really special price instead of $120 or more a year for 12 issues. They are $10 now if you buy one at B & N.

@MarieCoyle Right, that's what I meant. Ridiculous prices. How do they sell any at all?

@JamesHxstatic James, I honestly think that many people just blow money on stupid purchases without thinking at all. They live in the moment, I guess.

I was going by the price the publisher asks for them on the cover of the magazine. I picked up one I thought my daughter would really like. Neither she nor I wanted to pay $24.99 for it bad enough to get it.

If I want ideas for something, help with crafting an item or fixing something, I use Youtube or even Pinterest for ideas. Youtube has helped me to fix things I had no idea how to fix.

There were so many magazines that we used to buy and now we have stopped. The last we stopped was the "Readers Digest".

@MarieCoyle We had that magazine for years but when no justice was being done in that we hardly went through it then it was time to say goodbye.

I don't get free ones, but I was only an occasional magazine person before this, anyway. Now it's a big no, I will walk past them. I know everything has gone up in price, but WOW.

@MarieCoyle The library here sells old magazines for a quarter each. They are only a couple months old.

@jstory07 Now that is very nice, sure beats tossing them out. I used to donate mine to the assisted living nearby when I took magazines. Those people just loved them.

I can certainly think of a lot of other things to spend my money on that matter a lot more than a magazine or even a newspaper!

I don't think people really get much current news from any printed sources anymore. In today's up-to-date world, we now expect our news to be instantaneous. We all want everything right away. We have become used to that, I think.

I haven't bought a magazine since I was a teenager. I get magazines with membership of various organisations, such as 'The Garden' from the RHS and regular newsletters from charities, plus sometimes a batch passed on from friends or through Freegle, that I just don't have time to read any others.

We used to enjoy the newspaper; but now it's so small and expensive. I get magazines when I get a special price on them. They have gotten so expensive too!
