Curfew in Our Own Home: What?!?

Some of you know that an old, grumpy grandpa started invading our privacy since he came back home from Alaska for almost 2 months now. The landlord imposed a sleeping time schedule for us to stop any noise at 10:00 p.m. sharp. For the reason that his father, an old, grumpy soul, will sleep with his girlfriend, who is still married to her spouse. I know what you are thinking. This is the catch: this old man wakes up at 4:00 AM and makes a fuss at these wee hours. Is that okay? Come on, where is justice here? Our twins were acting crazy last night at 10:00 PM onwards. They do not want to sleep because they still want to play and watch their favorite nursery rhymes on TV. Just imagine forcing the children to sleep because it is the old man's sleeping beauty time. To cut a long story short, our landlord texted me to let them stop crying. What? We should impose another house rule in the house. I felt like we were having curfew in our own homes. This is not acceptable for me, but I need to be as cool as a cucumber. A few more days and he will be back in Alaska, but he will come back in November. We will figure out what to do when he comes back again. How would you feel in this kind of situation? Image Credit: i.ebayimg.com

Well, I do not think a landlord can impose when you should sleep. They can impose rules such as where and when to throw your garbage or lowering the noise level in your home after 10 p.m., but telling you to sleep at this time is a bit much.

@Shavkat It is true that you can not tell your babies to stop crying. Unless they make the investment to soundproof either your home or theirs so that people can not bother one another.

@rsa101 This is what I told to the landlord. I think he needs to do it.

This is what I am whining about, my friend. They are starting to control us. I am trying to be cool with this matter. If this old man tries to come in front of our home and knock on the door again, he will surely hear something that he cannot swallow. Besides, we are paying for the place, and we know what is right or wrong. The bottom line is to know what their boundaries are. How can he control children who are still babies to stop crying? It is so inconsiderate and bold to say this to us.

Unfortunately, the married girlfriend will remain here if he goes back to Alaska. I do not care if she acted like the owner of the house. Since they came here, the landlord is also stressed out. But he does not have the guts to confront his father for being engaged to this woman. We can feel the tension, but it is not our business.

@RebeccasFarm We are suspecting that this woman is pushing the old man to do something like this. They need to be careful because we are fighters. Roaar!

I would do my best to respect their dishes. Children that young should be in bed a lot sooner, and it's your job to parent them correctly.

@Shavkat Yes, it is. But, you have to teach them this isn't acceptable behavior.

@kaylachan Don't get me wrong. We do train them.

The babies usually sleep in the afternoon every day. We can compromise the situation. But, we never complain when they make noises at 4 am every day. We do train the twins aged 2 to sleep early, but they have the episodes of wanting to play and watch. They are still babies and cry if we are putting them to bed. It is normal that they cry if bedtime strikes at night.

I learned from my mother that we need to stay cool and calm as much as possible. I can only react if a person turns to bullying me and does unacceptable behaviors towards me.

@Shavkat They say it takes two to fight or have a confrontation. If you are able to not react, the other person is left floundering, .

It is hard to tell children to stop crying or making noise at a certain how. They dont understand that. They are just kids being kids.

@Happy2BeMe It seems the silence treatment works for them. Today, I even crossed paths with the landlord. I just nod my head and continue to walk. I am not in the mood to talk with him or see him.

You are so on point. When my landlord told me about this issue, they were only 2-year-old twins. How can we conceal the crying or making noise at their age? We cannot just cover their mouths to please this grumpy old man.

How did the landlord hear the children crying. What is the material of the wall of your house?

I think they really need to have a soundproof walls. It is them who have at fault in building this house of theirs.

@mildredtabitha I wish we could do that. We have not even reach a year here. It is easy to say, but it is not an option for us to do this.

Well, it is the law here not to make noises after 10:00 p.m. if you do, the police comes out and you get fined. Kids should be in bed before 10 p.m. Of course the law also forbids to make noises before 7 a.m. If this grumpy man annoys you too early, complain, as he did for you.

I think it is okay to follow such a rule. But then, these are still babies. This grumpy old man is not a good neighbor. According to the landlord's wife, he sacked his sons when they were noisy during their childhood years. Now wonder why our landlord is timid, and amen to his old man.

@Shavkat Here the rules are rules, even if you have babies (or dogs) you must do in a way not to be of an annoyance for the neighbors during the silence hours. All people arrive to keep them quiet and anyway kids must be in bed by 10 p.m. it is very unhealthy to keep them up longer.

That is a tough situation I suppose all you can do it try to get by this until the guy finally goes away again, I know the hardest thing is to get the kids to understand this,

It is quite challenging for us to let 2-year-old twins understand the situation. There is really something with this old man. I heard from the landlord's wife that his husband was being sacked together with the younger brother when they were kids. The reason is that they were noisy kids, and this old man does not like it.

Children are children and we should be flexible. You are having sleepless days due to this unwelcome neighbor.

You can say that. They keep on complaining about the kiddies while they make noises at 4:00 AM.

I don't think it is unreasonable to expect things to be quiet after 10 pm. My downstairs neighbor's son gets pissed when I text her to tell him to stop screaming on the video games. I have to get up at 5:30 am for work. You want to yell at 3pm? Go for it. When I'm trying to sleep at a normal bedrime? No. That's rude.

That is really not a good neighbor, too. Our twins are only 2 years old, and they cannot follow strict instructions to stop. It is unreasonable for us to close our mouths while crying. It is not a good thing to do for children at their age.
