Do You Remember...

I can't recall the last time I had freshly made whipped cream. I remember when I was a child and living with my grandparents we had most things made fresh from scratch. That included fresh bread, most foods we ate made from scratch, and a big breakfast made from scratch each morning. My grandmother would make pancakes nearly as big as the frying pan they were made in and nearly an inch thick. I never even knew some things came in a container at the grocery store until I was older. That included whipped cream. It was made from scratch. I can remember making my own by pouring out the cream from the top of the milk we got. Adding some vanilla and sugar (to taste) and whipped it with a hand whipper until I didn't think I could 'whip' anymore. I would watch the cream begin to thicken up and become whipping cream. It was so much tastier than the stuff we get at the grocery store nowadays. Making it from scratch today would probably cost 10x what a container of it from the frozen foods department costs today. Do you remember a favorite food of yours being made from scratch that isn't today?

Honestly I find it cheeper to prepare things from scratch then to buy prepared. Buying things prepared is just more convienent.

@kaylachan .......When you live with people who won't clean up the mess unless you police it all and you can't you tend to care about mess.

Every meal my mom made came from scratch. She never used frozen food of any kind, If there were leftovers she heated them up the next day and then went on to make a new meal, We lived in a great neighborhood where meat markets, vegetable stands, fish stores, bakeries and delis were within walking distance, Now when I think back and the quality of the meat and everything from the supermarkets I wish I still lived in that world,

My mom was such a whiz. She had little money but always made the best meal and fed four of us well.

Cool Whip is what my Mom used later on and I don't like. When we make whipped cream we get a carton from the fridge section in the store and put a little honey in it. Cocoa is good in it, too.

I don't like it either. Haven't made it from scratch in years. Cocoa and honey both sound good.

I remember my mother whipping the cream too long and getting butter. Have a good week.

I make homemade whipped cream. It's not hard and doesn't take long. The taste is so, so good. I realize I was fortunate to be taught to cook from scratch. So many people now eat all prepared foods, and use instant everything, they call it cooking but it's really just heating things up.

I used to make it all of the time. I used to cook most things from scratch. But now that I don't cook it doesn't happen.

@celticeagle I don't consider that to be cooking since I don't have to heat it up!
