They call it High Falls. As my brother said when I sent him a photo, “It doesn’t look very high to me.” Actually, this lovely state park near Jackson, Georgia is named after the long-since defunct town of High Falls. There was a grist mill (the ruins of which are visible below the gravity dam) and a cotton gin around the High Falls Lake, which connects to the Towaliga River. Many of the thriving towns that no longer exist in Georgia were obliterated by General Sherman and his blow torch as he and the Union Army marched through the state in 1864. High Falls, however, was spared that misery (mainly because of the diagonal trek the army took from Lookout Mountain to Atlanta, then to the Atlantic Ocean). No, what did High Falls in was the railroad bypassing the town. Sadly, the ruins of the railroad bridge were themselves ruined 30 years ago with a flood. While the town no longer exists, the natural beauty of the waterfalls are doing just fine, thank you. In addition to the cascade over the manmade dam, located in the center of the park, there are a series of cascades that descend about 140 feet. The park is amazing. There are trails on both sides of the waterfalls, allowing you multiple views. It was quite the walk (over two miles), but on a comfortable spring day it was hardly a problem. (I wouldn’t try it on one of Georgia’s hot and humid August days, though.) You can see the reward for the walk, too. In the top left photo there’s a heron enjoying the Sunday afternoon along with the rest of us. Oh, what a lovely afternoon!!! Those are beautiful waterfalls, not very tall, but I like those better than the very tall ones.

Well, it is tall by mid-Georgia standards. But yes, I love the cascades like this.

@LadyDuck — the actual highest point in Florida is the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which is 430 feet (130 meters) tall!

@FourWalls You reminded me Britton Hill, the highest natural point in the state of Florida, with an elevation of 345 feet (105 meters).

Mother Nature does quite well when left to herself, doesn't she? In our early visits to Ireland, they were busy building roads to bypass some of the village where all traffic had to go though a very narrow bottleneck. Some were worried that it would be the end of the line for some of those villages but I don't think that happened.

It has happened a lot in America. From the towns that disappeared after the gold rush to the skeletons of once-thriving towns along Route 66, it’s been a frequent occurrence here. Sadly.

Georgia has a lot to offer visitors with such diverse experiences. From beaches on the east coast to the mountains in the west there is something for everyone. My favorite stopover in Georgia was visiting the Underground Atlanta on the way to Florida during college spring break. Heard some great music there and enjoyed a fun drink I no longer remember the name of... Visiting historic Savannah was also nice. Took a trolley there around the town and watched the boats travel the nearby Savannah River which divides Ga and SC. Did you eat a peach on your visit.

@FourWalls And not a cross-country trip from your neck of the woods either. Beautiful country and lots to do. That pass is well worth it!

I went back to check for the heron after I read about it. I had missed it in the first glance.. It's a lovely fall, though not so high. It must have been a pleasant walk in a pleasant spring weather.

The state parks brochure says these are the highest waterfalls in Georgia south of Atlanta. Understandable, because the “mountains” are in northern Georgia and it gets flatter by Atlanta. I had a great time.

I saw one sitting in the middle of Beargrass Creek (which is a glorified drainage ditch) behind the mall at home last year.
