Getting a New Houseplant From a Friend

Today a friend of mine in the building told me that she is moving out on Monday. She is going to a local assisted living facility. I knew she was planning on the move but not this soon. She wanted to move to another assisted living, but they are out of space, so she changed her mind and is moving to this other place. She asked me if I wanted her special houseplant that she has had for 19 years. I asked what kind it was, and she looked at my small Ficus plant and said it was sort of like that. I am thinking that a 19-year-old Ficus is going to be pretty big, but I would be very happy with it. I will be happy with most any kind of houseplant she gives me. She asked me if I would take good care of it since she has had it for 19 years. I said yes. A little thing my mom used to tell me when she was living was that if you receive a plant from a friend, and the plant dies, the friendship dies. Anyone else ever heard of this superstition? My mom had lots of little superstitions like this one.

I'm glad you're getting a new plant to love. And, no, I hadn't. Or if I have, I can't recall from where.
