Info for people with Healthy Food Cards

Thought I would inform people who have what they call Healthy Food Card, or OTC card, which is what I call it. I have this card from United HealthCare, plus a Food Stamp card with a small amount on it. The OTC card does NOT pay for everything, and I know a few items it DOES pay for, but not all..especially THIS year as they added some healthy snacks to it. But for the past 5 years, I have gone to Walmart carted food, gone up to the cashier...presented my OTC card FIRST, then what it won't pay for, I use my FS card. About 3 years ago I found out that WinnDixie also takes the OTC card. So I started going there to get some things that are on sale (the only way I can afford to shop there). I have been using the OTC card first, then the FS card. 2 weeks ago I was in WinnDixie..took my items to cash out...used my OTC card..had $7.52 it did not pay for. I put my FS card in the machine and it asked for my PIN #. I was putting it in, when the cashier cancelled it. She then tells me I have to use my FS card FIRST..THEN the OTC card. I was shocked..had not had any problem with paying with the OTC card first before that day. To save her, me, and All the people behind me from waiting while she cancelled the order, I just paid Cash. When I got home I went to WinnDixie's website. Sent a complaint form telling them about what happened. Waited a week..Nothing. Went to their FB page and left a message. I was told someone would call me. Took 4 days of phone tag to finally get an answer this morning. The lady from WinnDixie Main Offic told me it was out of their hands, that it is something over seen by the Govt. Not their policy. SOOO...I called my United HealthCare advocate. She called the local store with me on the line. She told my advocate that it was the way the computer was set up, that if you use the OTC card, the system would not take the FS card. She was very nice about it, and apologized for the store policy. I gave my advocate the name of the lady at the Main Office of WinnDixie that I had talked to earlier. She said she would be calling her and letting her know that it is NOT a Govt Rule/law etc.! So..from now on, I will only be going to WinnDixie for OnSale Items, and if the OTC card doesn't pay for something...they will have to find what it won't pay for. LOL... I will Wait! LOL

I have a catalog of Medical stuff. But they only give you food Categories, but believe it or not even in those categories in certain stores is not covered. Each store decides what you can or can not buy in their stores. Such as Walgreens..they have everything marked OTC in their store...so you KNOW you can buy those things...but even Healthy Snacks that OTC pays for in other stores, you can not buy in Walgreens. CVS only has Their Brand of products available with the OTC card where as Walgreens lets you buy other brands. Walmart you can not buy Bakery stuff like cakes and muffins..And I have no idea what I can buy or not buy in their pharmacy as NOTHING is marked. I asked the pharmacy and even THEY don't know, LOL I told all this to the Advocate while I had her on the phone. I also told her how long it took to get through their Robot so that someone could tell the doctor's office that I do not have a co-pay. Maybe have a number to push to be connected to someone who can give that information. She said that was a good idea and would definitely tell her supervisor...maybe they can do that. I love United HealthCare. I get annoyed with their stupid Robot that answers the phone...I was yelling at him today. LOL When he asks a stupid question I just keep saying HUMAN BEING PLEASE! Eventually he gets it. LOL

@Ghostlady I have a love-hate relationship with them, too. I don't know if you have a smart phone or not, but they have a healthy benifits app that allows you to scan a product's bar code with your phone and it'll tell you if the product is covered. It's funny the store told you they chose what is and isn't covered. When I ran into a simular situation at walgreens, they told me the company (unitead healthcare) was responsible for changing what they will and won't cover and at what stores. Sounds like the two sides are just pointing sides at each other.

Do you think she made that up, hoping you’d accept she said it was the government, and then drop it? They probably didn’t expect someone to be that annoyed, but good for you for tracking down the truth.

I think you might be right...BUT....When I want something to change or do not think something is right...I will keep going until I reach the top of the ladder. I let a lot of things go, but if they are doing this to Me...they are doing it to others, and it isn't right. Like I posted the Manager of the customer service desk was so nice about it, and you could tell she agreed, but she really didn't understand the idea of the OTC card other than it paid for Healthy Food, and offered some ideas of separatling the healthy foods from the other, but though there are categories of what we can buy...there is no LIST, and no consistances of what is allowed. The easiest way is to use the OTC card first...then the FS card. Just Common Sense!
