How many of you still use chalks at school? Do you think markers are a lot better?

Thats a different and an interesting question and yes still most of the schools even the colleges uses chalk. Very few, those which are top schools and colleges use the white board instead of the black board.

yeah they must have lost of business or they have gone into the manufacture of white boards and the pens, but what with the machinery which is used in the chalk production.

Exactly, that's another issue we can discuss. Maybe you could start it? :-D

You know I am just wondering what has happened to chalk manufacturers.

My school, i.e. the school that I was in probably still uses chalk, because all the blackboards were quite new when I left school and would last for atleast 25 years! However, the last time I sat in a classroom was for a training, and they used markers. It was boring. There is no fun or that classroom effect unless we have that blackboard and the chalk.

you really missed those days eh? I must admit I prefer markers because the sound of the chalk scribbling on the blackboards makes me feel grit on my teeth.

Yeah, many times I do. Well, I think no one can stand that screeching sound the chalk makes sometimes, if its hard at the tip and it comes across a smooth surface on the balckboard. But the blackboards in our school, weren't really blackboards. They were greeen in colour and were made out of some glass-like material and so chalks very rarely made that sound.

Also, the smell given out by a marker writing makes me feel a pain in my chest. Probably it irritates the windpipe.

the school which my nephew visits have shifted from using chalks to markers and white board...... this was a demand put up by the school teachers concerning their health and it was good on the part of the management to do the shift.

My school uses markers or powerpoints (a computerised slide show). I think this is much better as its more effective and clearer.

To reduce allergies and irritants (and how long it takes to clean the classrooms), the school my children attend uses dry-erase markers for all of their classroom work. They also use easel pads with markers for work they want to refer back to often.

Surely, things are getting better..unfortunately, not to all. good for your kids. :D

Some lecture halls still use chalk here, some have white boards. I like PowerPoints and other stuff better than boards though. It's hard to read the professor's writing sometimes. Plus, both chalk and white boards have problems. Chalk breaks, squeaks, etc. Markers run out of ink frequently.

Good point, Pigglies. The professors handwriting, oh my word! :-O I didn't think powerpoint was another option. Thanks for bringing it up. Rated positive :-D

I think markers should be more used than chalks, markers are more easy to and more applicable for the health of the students. But I think it's hard for some of our public to provide for it, since they need budget just to provide for their everyday uses of markers and the white boards that they would. I think I've seen only a few of it, during my college days, we even still use chalks and in some other rooms we use markers. markers would be the best for a change and for healthier reasons.
@Jemina (5770)

Exactly, in our corrupt gov't they won't provide for the benefit of others especially the masses. but if it's something that would make the politicians' pockets swell, ooohhh, everybody would just support it.

That's exactly true. I have used both and I could attest to that.

Our school use both chalk and markers. And it depends on the type of classroom we use. In terms of writing convenience, markers are good for teachers whose penmanship needs improvement.

none of us uses chalks at school....yes i think that this is better to use than to use chalk.....because chalks are not good especially if you are asthmatic....whenever you inhale chalks you will cough and sneeze....marker in my experience in school the class never complain about health problems,but for chalks most of us are complaining because most of us are asthmatic....

oh I could add more to that negative effects of chalks, my cousin who used to have smooth facial skin, flawless except for the mole on her brow was ruined by chalk, disgusting indeed. Thanks to markers, her pimples have disappeared since she started using them.
@Jemina (5770)
24 Jun 07
That's true indeed. But I still want to thank chalks when markers were not popular then. For I remember how I used them to draw a big peacock and tulips on the wall. Good thing they are easier to erase on the wall.

We still make use of chalk in school. Most of the schools here in the Philippines actually are still making use of chalk. 90 % make use of chalk in our school, though, I guess there was a research done that chalk might be cancerous of some sort I'll just have to find out if it's true.
@Jemina (5770)

That's an interesting finding. Anyway, it makes me sad that our dear country is deprived by those scumbag politicians to benefit or take advantage of the technologies around us.

You're right, Shaun. Most people prefer markers because of the obvious reason regardless of the cost.

My school still use chalks but I had some classes wherein we use markers instead of chalks. I don't like chalks at all because it's very dusty and it makes me sneeze when I am sitting infront. Markers are much better because it is neat.
@Jemina (5770)

I am with you. Chalks cause allergies like pimples and asthma too. Do you wish all chalkboards will get replaced with white ones?

In my classroom we use a chalkboard. We are in a portable now but will be moving into our building next month, then we will have whiteboards. I prefer markers because the chalk makes such a big mess.
