Congratulations. That's a major achievement.
Did you go with professional editing? I've wondered about that. I know it's critical if you self-publish (at least the all-knowing "they" say it is). If you didn't go with a pro, how did you get the editing done?Congratulations again. That's awesome. |
 | DoriLentrich responded to a discussion called Do you like to write about people, ideas, or nature? in writing. 1 month ago
I like to write about it all. I think there are so many ways in which those various topics intersect. It's hard to talk about people and what they do without at least touching on their ideas and philosophy or the natural world. Likewise the other topics. Each exists in connection with the others. Nature abhors a vacuum and all that.
As to what it says about me, I have not the foggiest. I'm i... |
 | DoriLentrich responded to a discussion called Do you support your local arts cinema? in watching movies. 1 month ago
I'm in the U.S. and do support what would be my version of an arts cinema. I think it's important to support independent film making and the people who showcase it.
That said, it is a niche market. The reason indie exists is because it's not mainstream. It's there to appeal to the fringes of the mainstream audience. That's not to say that an indie film wouldn't appeal to the mainstream, lot... |

 | DoriLentrich commented in a discussion called What spell check or grammar checker do you use for your writing? in writing. 1 month ago
Semi-colons and I have a very rocky relationship. Just when I think I've got them figured out, they break my heart again. It's not pretty.
You can customize Word's grammar check. I don't remember the steps, but there is a way to have it look for specific things. Makes it a little smarter, but I still wouldn't plug in the Gettysburg Address (it always hates that). |

You're lucky. Sometimes I'm like you and can just have the words flow out. The better research I've done, the easier it is. However, on some topics it's just difficult to figure out which way would be the best. It's nice when it comes easily though.
Fiction writing and article writing are two very different things. They use different muscles as it were. However, they're not mutually incompat... |

You are so right. The internal editor is not a good thing when you're in the creative part of writing. He/she sits on your shoulder telling you that everything you're typing is awful. When you finally banish him/her and look back over it, you realize that he/she was wrong. I've fought that many times, myself. That's why I lock my internal editor in a big box and put him in the closet. He sits t... |

You're right about crushing other people's work. It's not right. Constructive criticism is a good thing that can be very helpful but it is not the same as ripping something apart.
I waver on whether everything I write has merit. It's not that I don't do my best on everything, it's just that sometimes I don't produce my best, if that makes any sense. It's difficult for me to judge if a projec... |
