It drives me crazy when people with kids who are about 10 blame their weight problems on having children. I have a 9 and 11 year old and I know the 10 pounds I need to lose are not because of them. It is because I dont exercise enough!

Maybe from a special family member or a girlfriend. At 17 you do not always put common sense first. It is so sad for him and his family.
