System Restore will allow you to go back to the last restore point that was saved and will restore system files. You won't lose what you've installed since then. You would have to burn them on a cd. All your personal files like pictures, writing, installation and key to programs you've downloaded & installed. I keep all my installation exe files just in case of something like this, as well as the key for each one. Anything you want on your hd after a reformat, you should have burned on a cd.
