usually laptops have a button to engage the wireless connection.Or check when you bring up the menus and click on the connectivity.It has to look for the closest router,and take it from there.That is how I did mine.Also on the task bar ,on the right side is an icon for internet access,and when you rt click on it,it opens your network,and sharing center.

My first laptop i got in 2008,and had the connection.I do not know if they had it before that.I would go on Google and enter your laptop,model number/connectivity wireless router,and see what it says.I always try that way first.
