Men can marry without love but it is a rarity. There is less pressure towards men to marry. Maybe in certain cultures where fix marriages are still enforce I will concede that a man will marry without love. But the greater population of men would not chose this life.

If that is the case then that is no longer love. The BF is a manipulative and selfish being. If he truly love your friend he should be supportive of her plans and goals.
