The fire was located in the intersection of Northwest 129th Street and Rockwell when the occupants of the home fled their home around just after 3am when they smell smoke inside of the home. The occupants of the burning home got out in time even though their dog was inside of the home when the Oklahoma City firefighters medical team were able to get the dog of the home in time. An investigation determined that the cause of the fire was accidental when the homeowner used an oily rag to clean an outdoor grill when the rag was thrown inside of an outdoor trash can when the rag smoldered and caused the fire. The fire spread to the attic and soffit before the fire was put out by the firefighters. Thank goodness no one was hurt in the fire. I go to the UAE very often, and I have been fascinated by the Falcons that flood the region. The local sheiks love this bird, which is also carnivorous. It is also used for a variety of sports and is the favorite bird of the UAE. During my last visit to Dubai. I had a good look at the falcon and decided to photograph it on my wrist. One has to keep a protective covering so that the talons of the falcon don't sink into your flesh. Now we start putting the post in the ground to start the roof work. I went to my primary Dr the other day to have a interview with him being he's my NEW Dr now since my other 1 left to another area & after a hr of talking to him & him looking over my chart he was very surprised at how well I have been doing since my health crash. May of 2023 I crashed like a ton of bricks cause of my Gallbladder that attacked my Pancreas, liver, kidneys, & I died twice from it all & 3 yrs later I have fought with everything I had to get back on my feet & get off some of the meds they have put me on & SO FAR I'm gaining ground with my health everyday, that I'm doing a LOT better, where My Dr says I'm doing so good he thinks it's best I get off the fast acting Insulin & just stay on my meds & the LONG acting insulin just take it everyday at the same time & keep active. I keep active & I take my meds everyday at the same time & my long acting shot the same time everyday & watch what I eat as well cause THAT has a BIG effect on my sugar so that helps too. I still have to see my sugar Dr today but if he agrees with my primary Dr of taking me off my fast acting Insulin that will be a milestone I have gotton off of & THAT'S a big milestone I've been working on since the day I got out of the hosp. [em]thumbup[/em] I may have to stay on my meds they have me on for the rest of my life but I can handle that better than I can doing shots everyday, so when he said he want's to take me off the fast acting insulin I was speechless I was SO GLAD to hear that. So I have stuck to my promise I made to myself to fight hard to get off the shots & show them I'm not giving up for anything I'm a strong willed hard headed person I just don't give up. I won't just stop doing what I've been doing up to this point cause of the great news, I'll keep doing what I've been doing cause I KNOW if I stop I know I could have it all reverse & that's NOT what I need to happen, not after getting this far. Wash means I'm done with the soaping and soaking in the washing machine ,now its time to remove excess soap with clean water. What I did was I remove the soaped clothes from the washing machine , I finished the timer when it was washed. I squeeze excess water and soap uaing my both hands and arms haha then place it in a big basin with clean water. Thats where I wash them. Usually in Asian countries this is a normal method and after doing that I will put the washed clothes inside the dryer to dry even more and then hang them to dry. Instead of taking my computer I'm only taking my advanced emt book so I can get studying done. I haven't been able to lately. I'm enjoying writing to new people so the pen pal thing is going great. The Final Target by Nora Roberts is almost finished. I found my glasses last night and it made life so much easier. When I stopped wearing them it didn't bother me but lately everything had started getting blurry and my eyes were hurting so when I put them on I was like yay lol. Yeah, I'm a little weird, but that's ok. The shop is ok. Not a lot of shoppers but a lot interested. It's hard when you can't keep actual hours. We're getting ready for fall and back to school. Hopefully things pick up. CPR classes have been put on hold as the person over it got let go so without someone over it, I can't issue cards. So I could teach technically but you wouldn't get a card so there's no point. I first responded to my first medical the other day which made me happy. I love how our supervisor is. I did my first 12 lead and he worked with me on it. I loved it. I'll definitely be braver and go on more when I can. Just like any other call. Football is really starting back up so I'll be getting back into that. I'm holding onto all of our football traditions as hard as I can and it''ll be good. I believe it will be good. That’s what I do, I take pictures of my bike leaning on stuff. This one might not seem like much, at first. My mountain bike, Agent Orange, on a bridge over Interstate 25 in Denver; a bunch of vehicular traffic roaring by underneath. But in this case, it’s the bridge itself that is the best part of the “stuff.” This bridge is called A Mindful Bridge and safely connects pedestrians and cyclists from a Light Rail/Bus transfer station to the neighborhood across the Interstate. And artists Jim Hirschfield and Sonya Ishii have turned a simple pedestrian bridge into a piece of public art. 296 eight-inch discs line the pathway, with a quarter of them containing quotes from famous people about walking, cycling, and general mindfulness - the goal being “to create a visually captivating piece that makes crossing the freeway a thoughtful experience.” I live just over a mile from A Mindful Bridge, so I use it frequently. I took this photo probably in 2023. As you can see, there is still some snow on the ground from a storm. (You’ll also notice the inevitable graffiti tagging, which makes me wonder if that might be why they left ¾ of the discs blank - maybe in anticipation.) My girls were so happy to be back in Tagaytay. We used to drive there often like maybe 2 to 3 times a year, because we used to live in a nearby city. We've made so many memories there. I can't believe it's been 4 days since our road trip. I've got more things to share later. We wanted to open the window in the attic at the top of the stairs in the hope that with that open as well as ground floor windows on the north side of the house, hot air would be drawn up through the house and out, bringing cooler air in from below (it seemed to work last time). But Paola insisted on keeping the windows closed because she was afraid a spider might come inside, especially in the night and crawl over her face; she wouldn’t be able to sleep for fear of what she thought might happen! My partner was getting extremely irritated by the whole situation, but of course he didn't want to confront them, and it was me he took it out on instead - and I'm the only one who's actually trying to do something about it!! So to overcome the spider issue I have made a screen to fit over the window. I used some of the insect-proof mesh I bought last year to use in the garden, and it’s held in place with Velcro®. Everyone was very happy with the result and Antonio (who is ridiculously protective of his wife) is now suggesting that perhaps we could make more and open another window or two. Meanwhile Little One, who has also developed a fear of creepy-crawlies, wants one for her bedroom window as well. So I’m pleased with the outcome and happy that it works so well but I do seem to have just added a couple more jobs to my already never-ending list! I did wonder if it was worth the effort and expense of making such a screen - the Velcro® alone was over £10 - and might be more cost-effective to buy, but when I looked online a screen of the same size (admittedly with a different fixing system) was £85 for a window that size! So back to the sewing machine it is. That machine certainly earns its keep. Quits after I get up an walk to the bathroom and take my Hot Shower. When I got back to the bedroom, I took my Blood Sugar (BS) test. It was 296. I was SHOCKED [em]shocked[/em] I have never had any test over 136, and most mornings it is under 120. I called Gabby and she said she would talk to my doctor about it. So I called my doctor's office and they told me it was probably due to the steroids they gave me. Gabby finally called me back and said the same. BOTH the Dr and Her said if it didn't go down after I took my medicine that I should come in and get insulin shot. I went down to 258 so I knew it was on the way down. I ate my regular breakfast as I was hungry. I slept till noon. An hour after I ate, I took my BS and it was 396. My Dr had told me anything over 400 I should come in to the office. I just went and got a glass of water instead of my lemonaide and rested. Later I took it and it as down to 228. Still too high for me, but better than 396. I ate leftover BBQ ribs from Monday night for supper..Nothng else. Worried, but not Too Worried. Gabby said my cancer doctor will give me a lower amount of Steroids next treatment. I think it is the 21st. Not sure what time yet. I was full of energy today. I can sure understand why people in sports take them. No pain all day except a headache first thing after getting up. But went away. Drank a lot of water most of the day. Fed the squirrels around 1pm. They were a little peturbed, but Buddy came for his peanuts..so I guess I am forgiven. Pretty called the landlady a few days ago and told her the sinks weren't draining well so they came to figure out the problem. They sent their snake down the drain in the kitchen and worked at that for well over an hour before deciding to look at the plumbing under the house. One guy crawled under the house and came right back out. Apparently, the sinks (bathroom as well as the kitchen sinks) all combine. The problem is that the pipes under the house run through a 10 foot by 8 foot slab of concrete 3 feet thick. (That's the floor in the laundry room.) Why someone decided to make a thick slab of concrete instead of pour a normal floor and putting a step from the kitchen floor down to that level is beyond my understanding. The plumbers can't access those pipes without taking out a chunk of concrete flooring and they have to get the landlady's permission to do that. This afternoon, Pretty had a doctor appointment. The doctor examined her and decided it's time for Pretty to have her first colonoscopy... Pretty's appointment was at 2 pm but was called into the doctor's office at almost 3:30 pm... (We don't know why it took so long.) Then we had to go to Walmart to get the supplies Pretty needed for the colonoscopy prep... By the time we got home, I was exhausted since I still hadn't taken my morning or afternoon nap. I slept for 3 hours. Her colonoscopy will be the 24th and the doctor asked that I come sit in the waiting room while they do that procedure so I can bring Pretty home afterwards. The doctor didn't want her walking home afterwards even though we're only 2 1/2 blocks from the hospital. *shrug* It sounds like a fun day for me although, I might get to tease Pretty if the pain shot and sedative makes her as loopy as it did me when I had a colonoscopy. I’m now legally a geezer, but I’ve been collecting music since I was around 7 or 8 years old. I’ve lived in my place for six years now, and by my count, this would be my 4th serious music collection (like The Matrix, I’ve had to tear it down and rebuild it over and over again.) Which means I’ve been keeping track for 6 years. I’ve always known throughout my collections that I’ve had stuff in “heavy rotation.” Just how “heavy” was unknown, however. This time, I figured once and for all find out how “heavy” I’ve listened to some of my records or CD’s. I built a spreadsheet with every piece of music I own a copy of. Every time I listen to something, I update the spreadsheet. Like I said, geeky quirks. After six years, I’ve got quite a few records in double-digit listens now, and I’m actually surprised at just how many are in the 20’s (a few I was like “Really? Of course, most of you know by now she died at age 55, of early onset dementia (she was 46 when diagnosed). Fortunately, we have a lot of pictures of her with Amyra, and I remember how excited she was to be a grandma. I also remember how much my grandmother loved Amyra and Hudson, and I’m so glad that they both at least knew her. My mother was such a gem! She was beautiful, but so was her heart. She wasn’t perfect, and would never claim to be. She worked hard to be a better wife, mother, daughter, friend, and educator. It’s time for an actual post. While I haven’t gone through many huge changes, there have been a few things that have happened and/or changed since I was able to post. I don’t want a bunch of mixed-up paragraphs though, so I’ll just use “bullet points” (aka dashes, lol). Just a warning: this is going to be long (but it’ll be broken up for easier skimming). - I forgot to mention before that our new washer works. We ran into an issue with it, but it was fixable and has been smooth sailing ever since. - The restaurant that hosts Yahtzee Night is hosting a Summer Trivia League, so we’re temporarily switching locations. It’s 10 weeks, and they add up your 7 best scores. The team with the highest total gets a cash prize. Sooo, why not give it a whirl? We didn’t do too well during the first week, and Trivia wasn’t hosted anywhere last week (the U.S. was in the World Cup, so places were hosting that instead), so tonight will be week two. OH, and I’ve discovered Happy Hour before these events. Certain food items on the menu are half-off, and this includes both meals I enjoy (the crab pretzel and the chicken tenders with fries). I’m looking forward to going tonight. :) - My niece moved out last week. She’s been slowly moving out for a bit now, and officially moved into her new place last Wednesday. She also took her cats, so that was heartbreaking for me, too lol. I’m not a big fan of change, but the only way for me to get through it is to GO THROUGH IT. So I did, and felt my emotions, and I’m doing better with it now. She’s only a 10-minute walk away (give or take), and has been over often. She’s supposed to be at Trivia Night tonight. I’m also planning to go visit the cats once she’s more settled. I think she wants to give them time to adjust. - During the day last Tuesday, I noticed my eyelid was hurting whenever I’d close my eye. When I got home from the coffee shop, my sister and niece both confirmed that my eyelid was red and swollen (the eye itself was fine). I took an anti-inflammatory pain reliever and spent a good chunk of the evening resting. I also used a warm compress overnight. I was able to get a doctor’s appointment the next day, and he confirmed that it was a stye. He told me that they usually go away on their own, so to keep doing what I was already doing. If it didn’t clear up within a week, he’d prescribe something. It’s already gone, so whew! - When I went to the doctor’s office to have him look at my eye, the nurse had me step on the scale, and I lost weight! So that’s a step in the right direction because, yes, I’m trying to lose weight. I’ll feel better about myself, plus heart issues run in my family on my Mom’s side, so I need to be careful. But hooray for progress! - One of the downfalls of being on stimulant ADHD medication is that there are frequent shortages. It’s a controlled substance, so they can only make and release so many at a time. It’s not going to do me much good if I’m unable to pick it up every few months, so I talked to my psych and switched to a non-stimulant. Non-stimulants aren’t controlled or on frequent backorder. It'll work around the clock (so no crashes) and won’t interact with my anxiety as much. It will take 2-6 weeks to take full effect, so I’m fighting the distractions until then, but I think it’ll be worth it. I felt a little weird the first day I took it, but I’ve been fine ever since. - A few months ago, I mentioned that a writing team had placed me on a temporary block of one per batch until I could get the hang of the orders. I submitted one about two weeks ago, and I only had a revision because I forgot to include something that I thought was in there. I write the orders on Google Docs because it saves automatically, so it was simply a copy-and-paste issue. It was accepted without further issues, and the block was removed, so woo! :D - My July 4th was okay. My niece came over, and we grilled out. I didn’t bother with fireworks, especially since there was a storm beforehand. None of us really bothered with them. I opted to stay with my dogs and watch the 2013 remake of Carrie. Unfortunately, we lost power at 1:15 am on July 5th, but we got it back a little after 11 am. I was worried about my elderly dog because we were in the middle of a heat wave, but she (and my other dog) handled it like champs. - As of yesterday, the air conditioner at the coffee shop is fixed, so yay! :D - On July 18th, I’ll be attending my nephew’s 13th birthday party. Yes, this is the little guy that I used to babysit (my best friend’s son). Wow, 13! She’s taking him on their annual trip to Ocean City at the end of the month (and the trip will overlap with his actual birthday), and my younger sister, brother-in-law, possibly my niece, and I are going to surprise him ON his birthday. Spectracide weed and grass killer and 1-pound propane tanks. The Sprectracide was advertised for $14.99, which is twice the price of what it costs at both Walmart and Menards. The 1-pound propane tanks were $22.99 for a pack of two of the Coleman ones, which I get all the time at Walmart for $9.98. I am sure people still throw these items in their carts. They must, otherwise there'd be no reason to stock them. But I have to ask why? Is it that people don't know? Or are they just like, 'I like Big R and I want to help them stay in business?' I mean, that's literally money to burn when you could buy about 5-pounds of propane at Walmart for the same cost as two at Big R. A nephew rang asking about some of our ancestors. He also said he’d discovered that I had another brother who died at birth! My parents were married in 1937, my (other) brother and sister (twins) were born in 1938, and I was born in 1946. The little boy would have been born somewhere between them and me, so to speak. My sister said she didn’t know about the child until her five boys were well and truly grown. My mother apparently said they were poor as church mice and they (the medical staff, I guess) didn’t try to save it. Maybe it was premature or whatever but now we’ll never know. The subject came up when my mother said the boy that died would have been a friend for my brother who had very bad sight and eventually went blind. I knew Pedro was, but to double check I turned on the porch light and opened the door. Three mid sized raccoons gave me 'the look' then turned around and moseyed off. I think that they were trying to eat my amaryllis bulbs I have in a planter. I just put it outside recently. Tomorrow it will come back in. I had not seen raccoons in town here, only dead on the highway. In this case, a specific fighter - “Hurricane” by Bob Dylan. Rubin “Hurricane” Carter (1937 - 2014) was a middleweight boxer (the most entertaining of all the weight classes, as far as I’m concerned) who was wrongly convicted of a triple-murder in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1966. He was imprisoned until 1985 before his conviction was overturned. Prior to his arrest, Rubin Carter was the 5th-ranked middleweight in the world with a record of 27-12-1 with 19 total knockouts. He is in the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame. Took snacks. Had one shot in my belly for nausea, and 2 bags of nausea meds. Then 2 different Chemo bags. The first bag burned going in, so they slowed down the IV and it was better, but took 50 min instead of 30 minutes. The 2nd bag took 45 instead of 30, it was smaller. Everyone was very nice and informative. My nurse was a lot like me. Didn't like her at first as she couldn't get the IV in. But the 2nd one did, and from then on the first nurse, Nurse 3, was forgiven and was very smart about the procedure. Met a couple of patients. Everyone was in lounge chairs. The person next to me asked about what they were giving me. I had no idea. I wasn't sure if the person was a guy or girl. But learned she had breast cancer. Forgot her name, but she read my orders and we STILL had no idea what they were. [em]rofl[/em][em]rofl[/em][em]rofl[/em] I think she has one more treatment and then they are doing surgery. All in all it wasn't a bad time. No one seemed sickly or had any emergencys. They have water for free, but the snacks you have to pay for..atleast SOME of them. Norway’s Torstein Træen (he pronounces it “Traan”) got involved in today’s breakaway, and while he did not win the stage, as the highest-placed rider in the GC (General Classification, or Yellow Jersey) rankings, became the new leader of the 2026 Tour, 28 seconds ahead of American Sean Quinn. Træen was diagnosed with testicular cancer shortly after a race in 2022. Surgery successful, he returned to racing in 2023, suffering a further setback when he fractured an elbow in the 2024 Criterium du Dauphine. This is not uncharted territory for Træen (who rides for the Uno-X Pro Cycling Team,) however. In 2025 he found himself in a similar position, leading the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) for four days. Despite Træen now having a 9-minute lead on GC favorite (and defending champion) Tadej Pogacar, it’s telling that Pogacar and the other GC favorites allowed this particular breakaway to succeed. That’s usually a sign that they don’t see anyone in that break as a threat to their Yellow Jersey ambitions. Pogacar and 2-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard are confident they can retake that time in the mountains. DBT stands for 'dialectical behavior therapy'. What is DBT? The short explanation is that 2 things can be true at the same time. 'It comes down to one simple idea: two opposite things can both be true at the same time. You can accept yourself exactly as you are, and you can still work toward meaningful change. DBT holds both of those truths together and builds from there.' We were all given binders with lessons and worksheets but obviously since people were constantly transitioning in and out of treatment no one ever really finished everything unless they did multiple stays which obviously was not the goal. There are 4 core concepts for DBT: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation. There are various skills associated with each of the core concepts. I still have my binder and I want to start going through everything again. It is funny because one of the big things that I remember from the sessions was that we weren't allowed to say 'but'. That word is considered to negate whatever you said in the first part of your statement. (the whole 2 things are true at the same time thing) 'I love you but I'm mad at you' puts the focus on the being mad part. 'I want a drink *and* I also want to remain sober' balances both parts of the sentence. In sessions the therapist would give out an old-fashioned push bell to a patient and they would ding the bell every time something we weren't supposed to say was said. Man that thing got a workout and provided many laughs. I'm going to start bringing the binder to the pool with me if the sun ever comes out again. We saw A Private Life. Jodie Foster stars and speaks really good French - yes, it’s in French. She plays an American who’s lived in France for years and talks in French the whole time except when expletivising under pressure, and then she swears fluently in very picturesque American. It’s a really satisfying and gripping film and was playing in an art house cinema in Belfast which unfortunately went mainstream years ago so I stopped attending. Used to be that all the films they ran were subtitled, not so much now. We got in for nothing because we had a voucher as a Father’s Day gift from one of my daughters. My wife got in for free because she is our disabled daughter’s companion, and we used our grumpy old persons passes for the train. A really cheap day out, and I enjoyed it. It was strange being up in Belfast again. We went to a cafe beside the cinema and the coffee was as awful as it was ten years ago. Hot bilge, and I couldn’t drink it. The thing is, you have to look at unit cost, not just the price on the shelf, and compare that. Things are smaller at Dollar Tree most of the time, so that just means it's even more important to work out the math. I am down to maybe two or three items it's even worth going in there for. The cranberry juices, for example. The Power-Stick spray on deodorant/cologne. Shampoo or body soap. That's pretty much it. It's also become just another Dollar General or Family Dollar, and neither of those stores have good prices either. Dollar stores like this will keep some customers. This is the first cruise for both him and his fiancé, so needless to say they are beyond excited. Their first port of call is Nassau, Bahamas. I can't remember the other ports they will be visiting in the islands, but I do remember that they will spend some time on a private island in the Bahamas, owned by the cruise ship company. The missing man was 70 year old Rondy Packard Senior who was reported missing by his relatives since June 28 after he failed to come home from a fishing trip. The CHP sent a helicopter to rescue Rondy by the use of first responders of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) to use a helicopter to hoist him from the rugged terrain to receive medical treatment after going missing for six days. The good news is that Rondy did not suffer any major injuries. Not sure how accurate that amount is but the credit amount is almost $3000. To that they added last bill’s amount of $202 (I hadn’t payed yet), which was an estimate reading as well. And they added on $181, charges for Feb 2025 to May 2025. The final credit balance is around $2538. With this new bill and a huge credit I hope that means from now on readings will be actual. But who knows… I removed the Family Energy esco (thirty party supplier) a while back and for whatever reason they put us back on it. I have to call the gas company and ask them why they put us back on it and have them take it off. I want supply to come directly from the gas company; no third party suppliers. My museum ticket has a name of a real passenger. What a pity I have thrown the ticket away before I wrote this post. Inside of the museum were ship models, photos and videos inside the Titanic. There were also statues as passengers sitting or standing inside the museum. How the cabin looked like for the poor and rich people, the cutlery used, etc. There were bunk beds, washbasins and small mirrors. Some passengers brought their own blankets and pillows. You have to watch him like a hawk. But last night was different. For dinner I made pan fried pork sirloin chops with green beans and stuffing on the side. The wife and I always eat in the living room on TV trays, and halfway through our meal, I heard a noise in the kitchen and shot up from my chair. We have a pass through between the living room and the kitchen, so I can see the island. That's where the food was staged to be served. When I looked, I didn't see anything, and Cal was pawing at my feet just seconds before, digging in with his claws to my frustration. So, I thought all was good. Something happened. I just had no idea what. A few minutes after, my wife went into the kitchen for seconds and I heard her yell, 'GRAYSON!!!' The rascal had grabbed a pork chop and taken it to the floor to try to eat it. I couldn't believe it. I mean, Grayson is not only NOT the robber baron, but he's also 'dainty.' The last day was Sunday, and we decided to just stay and hang out at the campground. It was a cooler day too, so we got to spend more time outside. I said to myself Oh Thank You for the beautiful weather, thank you for the blue sky , my laundry will dry and we will have another clean clothes to wear. What a beautiful day last Sunday. I finished the laundry and it dried well under the heat of the sun . When the wind blows you can smell the laundry soap I used, and you know that the clothes are clean. And sometimes I love that smell. Fellow lotters, when you do your laundry are using fabric conditioner? I only use fabric conditioner when its raining and theres not enough sunlight. I went on the ride along and had one call in like six hours. It wasn't horrible but new thing apparently is that I get to drive. So because technically I am capable and this is training I get to drive and get used to emergency traffic and backing up in the truck. Who knew? I never did that on any of my other ride alongs so it was completely new and I have to say I get her point. A lot of EMS is repetition and muscle memory so the more you do it the better you get. I drove emergent to the call and even backed in straight in the bay this time. I was super excited. It's the small things in life lol. Today I get to work for Chris sitting with her grandmother until 3pm. I plan on catching up on my pen pal letters there and studying. I even left my book in the car so that I didn't have to remember to take it down this morning. There should be one sale today. I sold a shirt so hopefully they show. I tallied the total sales for the shop for the year so far and the numbers suck. It's official I've sunk more money into the business than I made this year. It's pretty disheartening but my husband told me not to give up. So in answer to that I'm gearing up for fall and halloween. We'll see what happens and if I can get it to pick up a little bit. Try at least. I'm still reading The Final Target by Nora Roberts. I actually got some reading time in last night but I think I'm wearing my eyes out with everything. Just a few minutes ago, I found a video shot at a show I attended - Alan Parsons Live Project at the Paramount Theatre in Denver, Colorado, 11/11/2022 (I often look for videos from concerts I was at when I’m up all night.) The Alan Parsons Project (Alan Parsons, and the late Eric Woolfson) formed in London in 1975 and released 11 studio albums up to their split in 1990. Parsons, however, began touring under Alan Parsons Live Project. This would be the second time I’ve seen Parsons (I saw the Live Project open for Yes back in the late-90’s.) This particular show was postponed twice due to COVID issues, but was well worth the wait - the band performed pretty much the songs you would want to see them play. The Paramount Theatre is located in Downtown Denver, and, as Wikipedia points out, has a habit of drawing bigger bands looking for a smaller setting. It opened as a movie theater in 1930. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being recognized as a Denver Historic Landmark. (Off the top of my head, I’ve seen The Church, The Pretenders, Erasure, Garbage, and David Sanborn there. I’m sure I’m spacing someone out.) If she wants something pricey and decides to buy it, she says she deserves it. If she does anything out of the ordinary, she deserves it. Her family had all they needed and more. Thankfully after days of these storms we didn't lose power but both my middle daughter and my son did. My middle daughter got her power back about a day later and had to endure the storms and heat without any a/c. I told them to come here but they couldn't leave the pets and I certainly couldn't deal with their dogs, cats and whatever else petwise they have. My prayers were answered when they got their power back. My son got hit worse and the power company is saying they won't have power back until the 8th, Egads. They do have a generator so that helps. My son and family live in a very secluded wooded area and they said the winds had the trees practically bent in half. A very large resort near them had trees down and many of them fell on cars in the parking lot. Imagine paying a fortune to spend time at a resort and then your car gets damaged or totaled. Anyway, today we have more storms in the forecast but none of them are being forecasted as severe. My weekend was pretty good even though our big 4th of July family barbecue was cancelled due to the weather. She wrote another book called The Power which I read and loved. There was a show based on that book, but it was sadly canceled. She has two other books that I want to read. Lai Zhen is an internet survivalist and she is interviewing Martha. Martha works for a tech company. She also was part a religious cult that her father ran. Lai Zhen and Martha end up become lovers. But then Martha ghosts her, but leaves a gift behind. Lai Zhen doesn't know what the gift is until she is chased by an assassin who was part of that cult that Martha's father ran. The gift helped Lai Zhen to escape the assassin. She is freaked out so she goes to see a friend who ends up causing Lai Zhen to be involved a major coverup. In the end, the world becomes better and happier. I loved this book. I didn't want it to end. I highly recommend everyone to read this book. My brother's and my parents had an 8th grade education. I want to make it clear that my brother and I each paid for our own educations. Brother and I have had driver's licenses and owned our own cars since we were 16 years old. 1/4 of our cousins don't have drivers licenses or cars. I want to make it clear that brother and I bought our own cars. Brother and I bought and own our own houses. Only a handful of our cousins own houses. Some are in regular apartments. A good half of them live in government subsidized housing. I want to make it clear that brother and I bought our own houses. Nobody gave us anything. Our parents didn't have money. Brother and I have traveled extensively. He's been to 8 countries I think plus a good chunk of the USA. I've been to all 50 states and 105 countries. A good 90% of our cousins have never been outside of Kentucky. The rest have maybe been to a neighboring state or Florida. Brother and I have each worked for more than 40 years. The Varroa destructor is a parasitic mite that infests bees and is now present in five Australian states and territories. The mites are now developing a resistance to chemical and organic treatments. Professor Volker Herzig has venom samples from over 870 arachnid species and has discovered that spider venom will kill the varroa mite. The venom only affects mites but not humans or animals. The process is someway off being in general use but in the meantime another professor, Rob Harvey, is working on interfering with the gene make-up of the mites. Hopefully, there might be a solution in sight that would save bee populations from decimation. I like to leave my door open and listen to the city, day or night. I also live about a quarter-mile or so from the Interstate, so I get that traffic noise as well. In addition to all of that, I get both Light Rail horns as well as distant (about 2 miles) freight train horns. That’s not to mention the sounds of the people, even late at night. College kids (I live across the street from the University of Denver) yelling in the middle of the night, celebrating what one can only assume was a successful night of drinking at the Crimson and Gold. When DU Hockey is playing, the neighborhood is electric. Tonight, it seems, Denver is sleeping. The DU kids have all gone home for the summer. I haven’t heard a siren all night. Nor have I heard any traffic. Nobody is even shooting off fireworks like the last 3 nights. All I hear are the air conditioners of my neighbors. The veterans/first responders cycling group I ride with, Project Hero Denver, is part of the Project Hero national group. Each year, national holds a series of “Challenge Rides,” 6-days of riding through a region (Texas, Great Lakes, etc.) 3 of us from Denver took part in the 2024 California Challenge, from Santa Cruz to Port Huerfeno. And it was truly an international, allied peloton; we had 9 Canadian and 10 German soldiers riding with us. Sadly, I DNF’d (Did Not Finish.) These guys and ladies were pushing a pace I could not handle. So I switched over to helping with loading and unloading/sorting luggage at our motel stops. In the meantime, once we finished unloading the truck, I took my bike out exploring whatever town we happened to be in that day. Our Denver contingent did get in an exploration of Santa Cruz the day we arrived, and we had a group of high schoolers escort us out of Pismo, which was fun. I also rode with the group on some mornings where we rode to a local school before we left town. That was also fun. All in all, I managed to shoot enough footage from my handlebars to make a video. As far as Pismo Beach, known once for clamming, always known for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck ending up there in a 1957 cartoon, is now a tourist destination - the town’s main employers are mostly spa’s, restaurants, and hotels. The beach was nice, and I found it a wonderful place to explore by bike. The latest article about them involved ridding an island of mice. Islands off the coast of Australia are very important as nesting sites for migratory birds. One such island off our coast is Browse Island. It’s 450 kms off the coast of Broome and covers 17 hectares. As a nesting site, it was/is crucial to the overall migratory ecosystem but has been overrun by mice which prey on eggs and disturb the breeding patterns. The island, which covers 17 hectares (42 acres), was once considered a haven for seabirds and crucial to the overall migratory ecosystem in WA's far north. Scientists have now employed drone baiting and believe they have eradicated the rodents. I know the issue of birds eating the poisoned mice will come up and the article doesn’t address this issue. I can only guess that the seabirds are not in the habit of eating rodents. Hopefully, seabirds will now be able to raise their chicks more easily. A few weeks ago I was getting showered with spent grape flowers but that only lasted a couple of days. Then a couple of days ago I went outside to find my table covered in twigs! At first I was a bit puzzled because they had obviously not fallen from the vine, they were a completely different kind of thing. Then I realised; a pair of pigeons were thinking of making a nest in the vine. Unfortunately for them they don’t seem to be very good at it! When I looked up I could just see a couple of precariously balanced twigs and a pigeon’s bottom! I swept up the twigs and left them on the patio in case they wanted to pick them up and try again. The same thing happened again yesterday, but nothing today. They seem to have decided that is not a suitable place. A pair of pigeons did nest there one year and even though they were only a few inches above my head it was surprisingly hard to spot them. They are also amazingly successful, given that their nests are so primitive. It’s hard to believe the eggs don’t fall out or the nests just disintegrate under the chicks but they seem to manage and over the past few decades their numbers have increased astronomically so they must be doing something right! Firefighters from Hall County came to the venue of the two story building to find heavy flames outside when a bystander told the firefighters that one person was inside of the burning building. The firefighters found the victim inside of the kitchen floor. The firefighters took the fire victim out of the burning building safely. The fire victim that was rescued by taken by an ambulance after the emergency medical services via an ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where the condition of the fire victim is not known. The firefighters also rescued a second fire victim who was taken an ambulance to the same hospital. The condition of the second victim is not known either. The good news is that no firefighters were hurt and the fire was put out in time to prevent other buildings from being burned down. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the authorities. Well at this point it is gray but you get my point. Around 3 or so, we headed into Cape and went to the Century casino there. All said and done, my wife and I lost $50 collectively. It could have been much worse, and I guess the casino wanted my money back from the last time I was there and won $100. Afterwards, we went to Katy O'Ferrel's on Broadway in Cape Girardeau for dinner. Really good food. I had a Reuben and Dawn got a patty melt. I had a Guiness and she had a bourbon old fashioned. Probably too many to count. When we left the restaurant, we headed back down by the river and watched the fireworks, which were set off from a barge on the Mississippi. I did see the fireworks show in NYC and then headed to bed around 9:30. That's when the rain started and crazy wind started whipping up. I mean it sounded like we were in the middle of a bad hurricane. I wasn't feeling great so I fell asleep soon after that. I woke up at 2am and was confused. The hallway light was off but I always sleep with it on. I figured that the bulb had burned out. I went into the bathroom to turn that light on and nothing. That was when I realized the power was out. I just laid there tossing and turning and listening for it to kick on again. That happened around 5. We very occasionally lose power for a few minutes or so. An extended outage like that is unusual for this complex. I fell back asleep then until about 8. I'm up. . . for now anyway. Something l was unable to do when we visited San Francisco the last time was I did not have the app on my phone but I had downloaded the app before l left home & set up payments for it. I had ordered a Waymo driverless car through the app. It said it would be 5 minutes. We saw it approach us & the sign on the top of the car had my initials. It pulled up right up in front of us. The only way you can enter it is through the app on your phone. It then allowed us to get in once the door handles came out of the door. We got in & off we went. It was pretty amazing the map showed all the surrounding cars even pedestrians & dogs on the sidewalk. When the lights changed to red it pulled up slowly & waited for them to change to green. The journey took around 10 minutes before safely stopping near where the ship was docked across the road opposite pier 27. There are 800 of these driverless cars in San Francisco & they are available in other major cities throughout America too. They are all Jaguar cars & are all white with a green light on the top. It was a fantastic experience & one l enjoyed immensely. The others were impressed too but felt a little concerned about safety but I felt the car was really safe & never felt nervous at all & was really excited.
