I thought I had seen it all but yesterday was a new one for me. I went to pick up a prescription for the son, of course. It's not the first time it was prescribed for him. It's always been covered by insurance, no problems. When I arrived, I was informed it would be over $900. Um, NO. I told them to run it again and the tech insisted it was correct. The pharmacist was wildly busy, and I was told I would have to wait to speak to her. I told the tech I was willing to wait as long as it took and that I wasn't happy. Amazingly, it was about 2 minutes, and I was able to speak to the pharmacist, who insisted that it really was that much. I hiked myself off to Walmart, had the pharmacist there call the other pharmacy and switch it over to Walmart. Amazingly, the scrip was now NO CHARGE. This made me so, so mad...I was boiling inside. No, I didn't blow up at anyone, but I wanted to. I went back to the original pharmacy and showed them the scrip and the total--.$00--and of course the pharmacist got involved and then claimed it was a ''computer error'' and she would fix it. Seriously?? How many people got charged for it when it was previously covered? I asked her that...and I also asked her if those people would be refunded. She mumbled....I called their hotline when I got home and reported this mess. This is not acceptable. Why am I writing this? To try to pass the word, if this little trick gets pulled on you, do some homework before you pay an exorbitant price for no reason. And by “golden age,” I mean the era when networks apparently looked at a completely ridiculous idea and said, “You know what? Put cameras on it. People will watch.” And boy, did we watch. I got to experience the best—and the absolute worst—of early reality TV. There were dating shows, makeover shows, competition shows, people swapping wives, people surviving in the wilderness for some reason, and enough dramatic confessionals to make you wonder if anyone involved had ever heard of a normal Tuesday. But then came Amish Mafia. Yes. Amish Mafia. For those lucky enough to have missed this particular television fever dream, Amish Mafia aired on the Discovery Channel from 2012 to 2015. The show supposedly followed an Amish community in Pennsylvania and focused on a mysterious group of Amish men who allegedly operated as a kind of underground enforcement organization. Because apparently, nothing says “peaceful Amish community” quite like organized crime. At the center of it all was Lebanon Levi, who was presented as this intimidating, powerful Amish kingpin who supposedly ruled over the community and made sure everyone stayed in line. And if you’re already thinking, “Wait…what?” YES. That was basically my reaction, too. Every episode seemed to somehow raise the stakes even further. Someone was threatening someone else. Someone was breaking Amish rules. Someone was plotting something. Someone was driving around looking extremely serious. And somehow, despite everyone supposedly living this quiet, traditional Amish lifestyle, there was always enough drama happening to make The Sopranos look like a documentary about gardening. The best part—or perhaps the most unhinged part—was how seriously the show seemed to expect us to take everything. The producers presented this bizarre world of secret meetings, intimidation, revenge, hidden power structures, and criminal-style operations as though they had stumbled upon the Amish version of organized crime. Except instead of Tony Soprano sitting in a strip mall parking lot, you had Amish guys in suspenders. And the further the series went, the more ridiculous and unbelievable everything became. The situations got increasingly dramatic, the storylines became increasingly bizarre, and I found myself watching with the same expression people probably have when they see a car crash: I know I should look away, but I absolutely cannot. Of course, there was a major problem with all of this: Amish Mafia was marketed as reality television, but its authenticity was heavily disputed. The show was criticized for presenting staged or scripted events as though they were genuine and for giving viewers a sensationalized picture of Amish life. Which, honestly, probably explains a lot. Because if you ever watched an episode and thought, “There is absolutely no way this is real,” congratulations—you were apparently not alone. Looking back, Amish Mafia feels like one of those shows that could only have existed during a very specific era of television. It was the perfect combination of questionable reality TV, outrageous storytelling, dramatic editing, and a network deciding that viewers would apparently believe anything as long as there was a dramatic soundtrack playing underneath it. And somehow, we did. So now I have to know: Did you watch this absolutely ridiculous “reality” TV show, or were you fortunate enough to escape the Amish Mafia cinematic universe entirely? Because if you watched it, I have questions. In our background this tension of parents continues well into the time when the children have children of their own! Our child is still a student and she is still far from ' standing on her own feet'. Our daughter is going to face a very important examination of her life on Sunday next. It is known as NEET-PG. It's an all India eligibility test to find admission in post graduate medical colleges. Seats are limited but competitors are too many. Only those who qualify and are found eligible can get admitted into a medical college attached to a hospital. The daughter is studying for hours and hours to prepare herself for the upcoming test. We parents can't be totally free of a hovering thought about the test just six days away. It will be a marathon one sitting challenge of three and a half hour , starting at 9 and closing at 12:30. The girl doesn't like to spend an extra minute talking with us as she revises the 19 subjects of her MBBS. We will all be free of this situation by this time next Sunday, hopefully. I made a nice fresh batch of blueberry muffins yesterday, my husband loves them. At the end of the day, right after quite a heavy downpour I heard alot of sounds, like talking and laughing outside. That is a fall thing. It seems like a lot of this years crop has already been consumed. The squirrels enjoy them as well. I remember one fairly warm October night one year and I had the windows open it sounded like breaking glass outside, but it was actually the deer walking on the acorns. I don't think there will be as many this year, but there are definitely some. You have to take care when walking past the area with the trees so you don't get bonked on the head by falling acorns. Today is definitely going to be a cleaning day. I have misplaced both my regular glasses and keys..however, the second set of keys I am adopting as set number 1 as the key fob in it is better. I can't say the same for the glasses. They were not in my usual place last night and seem to have walked away, but they can't be too far. I had them on last night. Verizon is a mobile phone service provider. Our bill went up $20 for no reason. So I called Verizon Customer Support. I could barely hear the person I was talking to. They said they had removed our loyalty discount. We were still loyal customers, so why did they remove the discount? The agent on the phone talked in circles, so I finally told him/her that I was going to go to my local store instead. We went to our local store. We told the agent we wanted to downgrade our plans to simpler less costly plans. The agent said she doesn't get any commission for that and told us to go home and do it ourselves. She did inform us though that we'd owe nearly $1,000 if we switched plans because we got our 'free phones' last year and they would retro-charge us if we changed plans. So we went home and tried calling Verizon Customer Support once again. This person said she could help but kept saying she was restarting her system. After 20 minutes she said she'd call us back in 2 minutes. 15 minutes later she texts us and tells us to do it ourselves. I have several punch bowls here with just cups and no ladles. So finding 3 glass ones was enough to make me bid on this one. I discovered when I picked things up though, that it was only one. No problem, my fault. I can still use it. We laughed because another lady had the same problem with another item. It was actually on two items and she thought it was only one...because of the photos. So, I'm not the only one in lala land when bidding!! I usually do these late at night, so not always with it 100%! No big deal and it wasn't a costly mistake. Everything from deep breathing to walking to sitting calmly to do something that calms me--and I can generally get past the extreme part. I've never been the Nervous Nellie type of person, I try to find my solutions in actions, prayer, breathing, reading, whatever works at the time. More and more, I am noticing people are extremely stressed and overwhelmed. A friend of mine, coincidently who is a former head nurse for a psych unit of a large hospital, seems to be falling apart from her own stress. She is fighting some severe health issues, her very elderly mother's health decline, and now friend's husband has been diagnosed with Dementia. She is completely overwhelmed...she doesn't live nearby anymore. Her adult children are scattered across the country. I truly do hurt for her. She does have a counselor but usually that has to be done by telehealth due to her crazy life. I think she is going to hire a full time health helper. Her mother has a caregiver, but her mother is a handful and that's a kind way to say it.. Friend's stress is overwhelmiing. I can relate on the stress thing. I know many of you can, too. Health issues of our own or someone we love and care about, the economy, all of the upheaval in the world we see and hear about on a daily basis, and on and on it goes. I know many things have to be planned ahead for long term, it does help to have some simple things to focus on a day-to-day basis. At least it does for me. When you search online about people currently feeling stressed, you get way, way too much information. I found my ways of coping often work for people (hey, I was just going with what works for me!) I also discovered there is such a thing as the American Institute of Stress. Who knew? They claim these as top stressors: Personal finances and inflation: Cited by 64% to 66% of individuals as a primary source of anxiety. World events and politics: About 70% to 71% of adults feel stressed or anxious about current global events and the economy. Job insecurity: 54% of U.S. workers say fear of layoffs or instability significantly impacts their stress levels. They also reported many are stressed over fear of not being able to afford proper housing, lack of food and resources, etc. I think it helps to remind myself what IS going well, instead of dwelling on what isn't. Now that isn't always possible, as we know--but it does help. I am seeking to move him to the Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield, Kansas.He likes the idea of physical therapy, and more things to do. He tells me he is social. They will be better able to care for him than I am, and I can visit. It is more than an hour away from here, and I hate that. They have a locked or closed Alzheimer's unit. There is a courtyard that is fenced so they can go outside safely. He will get physical therapy and other therapies and care on site. They will take him to his appointments, draw his labs there. In addition to celebrating all the customary holidays, they celebrate military holidays as well. Bob has told me that being in the Army was the most fun part of his life, except he did not have a wife. Monday is his care assessment meeting, here at the house, to determine if this is indeed a good placement for him. When it is all complete and my DPOA is approved, I can move him there at any time. I am very sad, and yet it has to be done. I have five medical appointments and treatments that I need for myself, that I cannot get done and care for him full time. If he goes down to the ground or floor, I cannot pick him up. If he is confused, I usually can settle him for now, or wait him out.I spend a lot of time waiting. I spend all of my time trying to make him better, and that will not happen. I cannot take him anywhere because I cannot get him back into the house when we are done, unless he wants to do it. I will have to try that. . . . . . because you know what a huge tablet that is designed to create a paste does when you can't swallow it? Yup. It creates a paste inside your mouth. What, the song countdown has had two songs about brothels or prostitutes (“House of the Rising Sun” and “Lady Marmalade,” respectively), and there’s the Doobie Brothers’ “Toulouse Street” (which didn’t make this countdown). Why is that? Let’s talk about Storyville. Doesn’t that sound like a pleasant name? Well, in doing this countdown I’ve found a lot of stories, and history, about the city. One of the things I found is that New Orleans was home to the first government-approved and regulated “red light district.” Las Vegas had nothing on New Orleans when it came to being “sin city”…in fact, New Orleans was the first city in America slapped with that unflattering label! In the late 19th century New Orleans councilman Sidney Story (pictured from the video screen grab) decided that he’d had all he could take of the “street walkers” tarnishing the reputation of the city. [em]rolleyes[/em] He drafted legislation that would remove all houses of ill-repute from the “tourist” area around the city and relocate them to a single place. Hopefully, Story thought, “out of sight, out of mind.” You know, they call prostitution “the world’s oldest profession” for a reason. Out of sight? Maybe. Out of mind? Are you nuts? Anyway, the law was passed, and a section of New Orleans, “off the main drag” as we would say today, was cordoned off as the only place where “disorderly houses” could operate. Now, Story thought he was doing something moral and upright. Imagine his humiliation when the prostitution area of town became known as “Storyville.” In fact, he was so distraught that his name was linked with the brothel section of town that he left town! (He moved to that bastion of morals, Chicago, [em]lol[/em] where he died in 1937.) Then there was advertising. No kidding! There were a number of competing directories published (the most famous being the Blue Book) that listed the addresses of the brothels; AND, in many cases, had photographs and biographies (real or imagined, such as much of what one of the most famous madams, Lulu White, said about herself and her girls) of the ladies who were available. The title page of the Blue Book had, in French, Honi soit qui mal y pense (“Shamed be anyone who thinks evil of it”), which should tell you that these weren’t exactly cloistered nuns putting this thing out. [em]lol[/em] Not only were these published and sold for money, they carried advertisements. Many of the ads were for cigars, liquor, and pharmacies offering snake oil, I mean curative treatments for various diseases (some books explicitly mentioned syphilis, while others were more tactful). When they went into the basement to pick up something to throw away I showed them the alcohol I had in the top portion of the wall bar. I wanted to get rid of all the bottles there. They said yes so I told them to take them all. I was standing there watching them take stuff out but then left upstairs so I wasn’t in the way when more guys came downstairs. Big mistake that was. After the junk removal people left and I went to the basement I saw a door slightly open in the bottom of the bar. It was closed before. I opened it all the way to find empty shelves. They should’ve had stuff there. Stuff I never intended to throw away. There should’ve been a beer glass, four or six (forget exact #) small coffee cups with saucers, and a Tiffany box with two glasses inside (my wedding gift). There was also a small champagne bottle there from my wedding with my wedding label on it. And another one from my cousin’s wedding. I can’t believe they took that stuff. All I asked them to do was take the alcohol I showed them. I never told them to open the bottom doors and take stuff from there. I called the junk removal guy and told him about it. He managed to find the Tiffany box and one of his workers brought it over. It wasn’t in ideal condition. I didn’t yet unwrap the glasses but I hope they are not damaged. Later, he found the beer glass and the coffee cups and saucers, except he only found two. I wonder where the others went. He dropped them off to me himself. The beer glass seems fine and the coffee cups as well, however, one of the saucers has a small chip on it. I am disappointed that I don’t have the two champagne bottles and all the coffee cups and saucers, but I’m glad that I have some of them back at least, and the beer glass and, more importantly, the Tiffany glasses. I really do hope they’re not damaged. I wish I had never left the basement. They wouldn’t have taken that stuff on my watch. Lesson learned. Either stay with them the whole time they are taking stuff out or do not have stuff you’re keeping in the same place as the stuff you’re throwing away. Oh, and they did a little damage to the wall when they were taking down the dresser from the third floor. They were careful but not careful enough. I thought they were gonna completely take it apart before taking it down the stairs to the first floor. All they did was remove the doors and drawers. The total of the junk removal was $525. That seems like a lot, but they took a lot of stuff away. Every so often, you can still see flashes of lightning. The power went out for about 12 minutes, but we were fine. The power came back on grid after the worst of the storm. And, I think it's the system saving itself to keep us protected in the event something strikes it. It is a good 2 hour drive for us one way. We normally stop at Jack's Family Restaurant, which is actually a fast food place, but much better than McDonalds, Burger King or Wendy's. They serve burgers, fried chicken, chicken fingers and some plate lunches. They also have a wonderful breakfast. This chain is only in the south, but expanding. I believe a new one is opening soon in Arkansas. We had a very light breakfast so both of use was hungry. But my husband always wants to stop somewhere on the way home also. It's only 3-4 hours later usually and I'm not at all hungry yet. So we decided to go ahead and stop and then maybe wait until closer to home to stop and eat. We picked up our auction wins and got it all wrapped and packed within an hour and hit the road. I asked my husband if he wanted to go check out some pawn shops in the area or go look around somewhere else and he said that the only pawn shop he wanted to go to was the one we bought the guitar and the ring from. We went there last week so decided to skip that for now. He next suggested going to the Reservoir in Brandon, MS. So that is where we headed. The place was deserted on a weekday and he enjoyed the visit. He took lots of pictures to send to his brother. Right after that we got into a bad thunder and lightening storm coming home. The lighting looked like a continual laser show. It was bad. The rain let up by the time we got to Cracker Barrel for dinner. However, it started back up before we got back into the car. The rest of the ride home was very bad. Just a couple of miles from our home the streets were dry. No rain at all and we found the same result when we made it home. It's been a very busy month. Today I woke up on fire. My brain is ready to explode with everything that's busting to come out. But I thought I would let you in on what's happening. Especially if you wondered if I was still alive. Yes, alive and kicking. If you've followed me, you know I've been dealing with some bad back pain since April. On my birthday, I woke up totally pain free. It doesn't mean my back it better. It just means God gave me a wonderful pain free day. About my birthday. It was a calm quiet day. It was a Sunday, so I went to church, then messaged my son to find out if we would get together. The message came back that he wasn't home. At 7:30 that night he called and apologized. He had just realized why I asked if we were getting together, wished me a Happy Birthday and promised me we would do something that weekend. We did. He took me to Highcliff State Park. I did something that day that I haven't done since I got COVID at the beginning of the year - I walked a portion of the trail. Not the whole trail that would have been six miles, but almost two miles. Yes, I was exhausted when we got back to the car, but in a good way. I also climbed the observation tower and yes, I played on the playground equipment. I have pictures to prove it. We finished the day at a fish fry. It was a spectacular day. So, what else have I been doing? Writing. Of course, I'm writing. My brain never stops not even to sleep. My characters follow me to dreamland. I have eight books in progress right now and that doesn't include the new ones I have slated to start writing. I needed to cause damage, a lot of damage. The only place I cause damage is in my books and I wasn't about to kill off a character. I started a new book - Storm. In eight days I've written over 24K words. That's not a usual pace for me. That's accelerated in a big way. Today, I start work on chapter 6. Yesterday for the first time since March, I went to rock painting. I started a new rock. I'll finish it in two weeks. It's been a rough several months. My severe back pain took me to a spine specialist and two MRIs, CT scans and a trip to the emergency room when I fell flat on my back and hit my head on the floor. I'm on a blood thinner so that meant a trip to the ER. My head is fine. That was the least of my problems. The first MRI my doctor ordered showed increased osteoporosis and the old spinal fractures. It also showed something that could be a problem. My spine specialist ordered a second MRI to confirm I had a broken non-displaced tailbone fracture. No pain with that one, praise God. This year has also been difficult with me spending more time at home on Sunday morning than in church with my back as bad as it was. I've been back in church since last month and I no longer need the walker. I had to use it for a few weeks while my back started to heal. I proved to her on a subsequent visit that I didn't need it. I DO NOT have balance issues. The reason I fell flat on my back was due to my orthopedic shoes and not my balance. I had just wiped out the bottom of my stove after cleaning it, and was walking backward to the sink. My shoes planted but I was still moving. Hence the trip to the ER and subsequent CT scans and MRI. Coming up: I have a 50+ Retreat from the 10th to 12th of September and the Untitled Town Author and Book Fair from September 25th to 27th. I just ordered new business cards - they arrived yesterday, and I need to order more books for the fair. I'll do that when I get paid. I also have a praise report - My son is going to church, not always with me as he visits other churches as God leads, but he is calling my church home his church home. I'm so happy and proud of him for the work God is doing in him. Today, I got a royalty announcement in my e-mails. It's not a lot, but I have an international royalty added to the one from the US. It covers doctor visits, public hospital treatment, and some other medical services, either free or at a subsidised cost. It doesn’t fully cover such things as private hospital treatment, dental, physiotherapy, and glasses. Doctors can ‘bulk bill’. When we visit our practice, we pay nothing for regular consultations. The practice bills Medicare. Private health insurance is not essential for basic medical care; however, there may be a long waiting list for some surgeries and/or treatment. Private health insurance is optional and policies vary considerably. Depending on the ‘table’ you choose, you might be entitled to a private room in hospital. Certain services such as dental, optical, physiotherapy, will be at least partially covered and mostly you’d avoid long waiting lists for some/most surgeries. We are free to choose our own service provider. Of course, it all comes at a cost. We’ve had private health insurance ever since we got married. And here in Denver, we’ve got a good outdoor recreation destination right inside the Metro Area. That’s my gravel bike, Agent Gravel, at the pier at Cherry Creek State Park, located in the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado. Cherry Creek State Park is naturally best-known for its 880-acre reservoir, built between 1948-1950 for flood control (Cherry Creek flooded way back in 1864, and again in 1933, taking out large portions of Denver) by the Army Corps of Engineers. The earthen dam and the reservoir are both owned and operated by the Corps. Obviously, water sports are a big draw, with boating and jet skiing being quite popular. There is also an imported-sand swim beach which brings both swimmers and paddle boarders. The park also has 12 miles of paved roads and 35 miles of multi-use trails for hikers, runners, and cyclists. Nature watching is also a big deal at the park, which boasts 40 mammal species living inside the park’s ecosystem. There is also a radio-controlled airplane field for enthusiasts (I often hear the planes and see them flying overhead while I ride my bike around the reservoir.) There’s also a gun range. I usually hear the guns while I’m riding, as well. There are campgrounds available, some year-round. Fun Fact: Pope John Paul II held a papal mass at the park in 1993 for World Youth Day. It’s estimated that 500,000 were in attendance. The kids then walked a pilgrimage from the park to the stadium, using the Cherry Creek bike path. We forgot and tried to ride the packed trail that day. We quickly found another route. I love riding my bike in Cherry Creek State Park. Thought I would share today's food and everything. Tomorrow will be another weigh in. I know I have gone down, just not sure the total yet. So, what did I eat today? I started the day off (well I got up at like 10 and didn't eat till almost 1 PM) with 2 eggs and 3 oz pork sausage. I don't know if I will do that again, I am not a big fan of pork in general. The eggs were good though. Then about 6 PM I had a protein drink, wasn't too hungry but I know I hadn't had near enough protein for the day. After Eli's back to school night I was starving, so we got a bottom round steak at the store. Had I planned to cook it tomorrow I would have marinated it. It was pretty tough, well in certain parts. The taste overall was good. I ended up having a little over 3 oz of that. Cooked everything in butter, of course (not the protein drink lol). Also had a little butter on its own, carnivore should be called fativore, as someone said. To drink I have had water, a bit of zero sugar soda, and a zero sugar energy drink. The last two I know aren't carnivore, but help me stick to it. And I don't do the energy drinks often. However, they do add a few carbs from the sugar substitute in them; so that is why the carbs are a bit higher then they should be. Also the protein drink has a bit of carbs. Macros for the day: 1,189 calories, 9 carbs, 94 fat, 74 protein Mostly good macros for the day - carbs should be closer to zero, and protein I want to at least be in the 80s, but it's pretty close. Then fat to get me to the right amount of calories. As for blood sugar - it was higher today for some reason. I think I started higher, and it just went up from there. After walking around his school I was in the 150s. Also didn't help that I was out of my CGMS to track my sugar every 5 mins. Thankfully the doctor called in a fresh prescription quickly! Yesterday, the veterans/first responders cycling group I ride with, Project Hero, had our weekly Wednesday ride. Under normal circumstances, these are casual, no-drop rides. Yesterday, however, only four of us showed up, and we’re all strong riders, so our casual, no-drop ride turned into a 35-mile training ride. We did it in 2:53, which means we averaged 1-2 mph faster than we might normally ride, depending upon the makeup of the group. We’re training for the Denver Century Ride in late September. We’re looking to have 20 riders repping Project Hero, with most of us ganging up on the 50-mile course (it’s actually 48.9-miles, so I’ll be riding that extra 1.1 to get my 50.) The course does have 1,700 feet of climbing. And while it’s not a race, there is a cut-off time, but we figure we’re going to be in well before that (hopefully. Because you just never know.) Yesterday’s ride was a great training ride. I would say the four of us are definitely ready. One of our guys actually rode from his home in one of the suburbs to the ride, then rode with us. The result was his first-ever metric century (62 miles.) Our group leader is always ready - he’s doing a 400k ride this weekend. The third guy in the group also rode from home to the ride - he got over 50 in yesterday. And while I only got 35 in (I too rode to the ride, but I live 2.5-miles from the meetup spot,) I felt like I could have cranked out 15 more miles if I’d needed to. I think we’re all going to do okay. Since I couldn’t sleep, instead of wasting time watching You Tube videos, I wasted time, errrr, got productive and made a You Tube video. There are art murals all along the Cherry Creek Trail that runs through the Denver, Colorado Metro Area. Denver Public Art says that if you walk or ride your bike for an 11-mile stretch, you’ll see 48 murals on the walls. That’s my gravel bike, Agent Gravel, leaning up against one. (There are a few sculptures included in that 48 count, as well.) Many of the murals have been around for quite a while, some are from last year. I know this because last September, on one of our Sunday Project Hero rides, we rode past a string of artists painting murals. Now I know why! They were painting murals for an event called Wall Fest 2025. The idea behind Wall Fest was to celebrate local talent while creating a visual experience along the path. Spray paint art, brush art, people, animals, nature, it’s all on display on the trail. There’s still a lot of room on those walls, though. And Denver can never have enough public art. Nothing has been announced, but here’s hoping for Wall Fest 2026! Not carnivore, but wanted a low carb, low cal drink. Even with steak the calories were pretty low, but that cut of steak is pretty lean. Hoping to find more though because it was delicious. Some are one week on, one week off; others are two weeks on, two weeks off while others might be three weeks on, one week off. It depends on the individual contract and pay level. Some even fly in from other states. While the money is good, there may be elevated mental health issues. It can be hard on wives too, left behind for 1-3 weeks with, maybe, several small children to care for. So I’m wondering if other countries have these FIFO arrangements.
