All cats are smart but choose when & where to show off. it's an attitude thing. One door will be open to go in and out but the cats will often insist someone open a different door. Put a paper collar on him for the next week or so. Write a message on the collar that he is not a stray and to not put a collar on him etc. A paper collar will not pose a safety risk if he gets it caught on something it will easily tear off... hopefully the person who put the purple collar on him will get the message.
