That's a good question. When I first saw it, I immediately thought is was some experiment that went crazy. It seems like people were doing experiments that they shouldn't have and this one got away. I don't know if the Others created it or someone else did to protect themselves from the Others. It does get blocked by that force field. I think, and am hoping, that they will explain where it came from. Juliette did say that they knew about it, but didn't say exactly what it was.
Maybe it's Ben's power. Remember, he seems to be able to make things happen, or at least it's implied that he can. Like he said he can cure Juliette's sister's cancer and when he needed a spinal surgeon, the plane with Jack crashed.

That is a good theory, but why is he so perplexed by Locke's healing? Ben gives me the impression that the island is more connected to Locke than himself. Also, Ben said he lived his whole life on the island. Do you think that conception and delivery every existed on the island at one time and could Ben be the last or only one that this holds true for? How come he developed a tumor in the first place if Rose's went away when she arrived on the island? As for smokey, I think it is its own individual. Its latest viewing when Juliet and Kate were hidden in the trees showed itself white like Locke first described. It definitely is electric in nature and maybe even magnetic. It appears to spark at times. If you look very closely, within the smokey clouds that comprise it, are occasional volts running through it, like lightning in a storm.

I think the smoke is an expierment gone wrong as well. Or it is a big hoax to scare people. Who knows? maybe it was something someone thought of that came of the box that the others was telling Jack about.

To be honest, I have no idea what the smoke monster is. I think the smoke monster being an experiment that "got away" is an interesting theroy. I kind of thought it was ridiculous when it killed Ecko though.
