Do you feel safe in you're own home?

Do you feel safe, where you live, and in you're own house and surroundings? I have grown up in the same town and lived in different parts of it, the current area i live in, i have been here for 10 years, and always felt safe. Relatively anyway, we always lock our doors, and windows and never leave them open. However someone recently smashed my mums back window with a spade and took my dads wallet and mobile phone! I dont understand the logic at all, as it was only 1am, which i class as quite early as i often see lights on in houses down the street. It was also such a noisy way to do it, surely they'd of wanted to be quiet to avoid causing any extra attention to themselves! But my main point is that now this has happened i am scared to go to bed now, i live alone, but across the road from my parents, iv always believed that i felt safe in my own home but now im not so sure! Whats it like where you live, do you feel safe, are these every day occurences? Or perhaps worse? I suppose as long as i have my doors locked i should be ok :)

All most household door and window locks do is keep out the honest people. You say they accessed your parents house by breaking a window? I'm assuming you have windows that are breakable too, right? Never assume that you are safe if you live in a neighborhood with recent break ins or ongoing criminal activities. Either get a room mate or a dog. Even if it's just a yapper, like a small breed type that meet restrictions of most apartments or rental regulations that do allow pets. If nothing else, they make great alarm systems and can hear a pin drop outside your door or window. That at least, gives you time to get to your phone or run out another door to safety. I have 3 dogs, a yapper(dachshund), a lab X and a Doberman Pincher. No one walks by my house without me knowing it, let alone get in the yard to either knock or break in :)
