Which would you choose - Toaster oven or Microwave?

Background on this question: Hubby and I have a 28 foot boat. As it is small, the galley (a.k.a. kitchen) is small as well. Right now we do have a microwave there, but we inherited a used toaster oven from his mother when she bought a new one recently. We took the toaster oven to the boat, but it is still just sitting on the back bunk just taking up space. I would prefer to replace the microwave with the toaster oven, but hubby wants to keep the microwave and ditch the toaster oven. Which would you prefer?

Honestly I don't think I could survive without both my toaster oven AND my microwave. I know that galleys are small in general but I say if you have enough room; keep them both! They both have really different uses. (oh and I don't own a regular toaster so without my toaster oven I am not having toast)

The reason DH picked the microwave he did is 'cause it has a 2-slice toaster as well. I would still rather have just the toaster oven, but oh well. I wait and see. We just got samples of marine flooring over the weekend. The below-deck area is in DIRE need of new flooring, along with laminate for the galley cabinets and some other projects. This is as bad as a house!!! LOL

Well, turns out this weekend we solved the dilemma - the toaster oven is now on top of the microwave. We ended up using both, just not at the same time. I went to the grocery store and got some things that needed the "oven" and some things that took less time to microwave than bake. So for now we will use both!

I'd rather have a microwave as it would be more useful and use less power though microwave food is never as nice as something cooked in a conventional oven. It's a shame that you don't have room for both as it would good to have a toaster oven too.

I would prefer to have just the toaster oven. It is smaller and sometimes food does bad things after getting nuked. The only good thing about any microwave is that it's fast.

Well both have there uses. you can't really cook meat with the microwave or it's tough and chewy and the microwave is fabulas for all sorts of things. So if it were possible it would be good to keep both. I have both a microwave and a toater oven and I wouldn't want to be without them. I can understand the space thing but can't you store it somewhere under a bed in a cabinet a closet perhaps until it is needed? It would be alot easier to store a toaster oven somewhere then a microwave that way you have the best of both worlds by being able to use both.

We have the toaster oven on the boat, but since the microwave takes up so much spaceon the counter, we really can't use both.

I would prefer the toaster oven, as it is much more versatile that the microwave oven... You can bake, broil and even fry food in a toaster oven and it uses less power... That's my opinion and it's based on being a fisherman with a passion for boats... the microwave oven can be used for cooking, but it takes some effort to get around that learning curve and make a great meal... Good question! :) Expert Village for you! :) http://www.expertvillage.com Have a great day!

I picked up a couple of cook books geared for cooking on boats recently and most of them require baking. That's just one more reason I would prefer the toaster oven. Hubby's reasoning is that he just wants to heat up leftovers on the boat, but at home he uses the toaster oven for that. Go figure! Besides, the toaster oven is much smaller than the microwave - our galley isn't very big to begin with and it leaves me with no counter space at all.

I've never really owned a toaster oven, and I've only had a chance to use one a few times. I would definitely prefer the microwave over the toaster oven though, because a microwave is much more versatile. When I lived in the college dorms last year, me and pretty much every other student had a microwave in their rooms.

Personally I would rather have the toaster oven. I like the way food cooks in it better. It also depends on what you are wanting to use the items for. I could live without a microwave. My daughter on the other hand couldn't because she loves micowave popcorn.

Obviously, needs first. But DH has different ideas.
