When you write a check do you sign it first, or last?

Whenever I write a check I always fill it out completely then sign it last. I noticed, however, that my wife usually signs it first, then fills in the rest after that. I just wondered if everyone else signs first, or last. I never endorse the back of a check until I am ready to cash it. I have seen people endorse a check and then hold on to it for days before cashing. I just don't find that to be a safe practice. What do you do?

I always sign the check last. I just find it a more safe practice to do in case I don't get the fill the entire thing out right away. That way, if someone gets ahold of it, they really can't do anything with it. I never endorse one until I'm going to get it cashed either. I don't trust people enough to do that.

I'm with you my friend. I sign it last on the check, and endorse a check just as I am cashing it. Have a great day. Another + rating for your post. Keep up the good work.

I only sign my check when I have complete writing the details n the check. Meaning I sign it at the end. It is a safe practice to endorse the check in the bank before presenting for clearance.

I am like you when it comes to checks. I always fill out the rest of the check before signing it, and I never endorse the back of the check until I am just about to deposit it. Either way, if one of those signatures aren't there you can't cash the check. It's the most important part of the check. In any case, it's better to be safe than sorry.

It really depends on who I'm writing the Check for. If its someone I know then I will usually sign it first. It also depends on what the check is for. I know your not suppose to but at times I will endorse a pre dateted check for a friend or if I am paying a bill. Most of the time I will endorse it after I write it just in case I write it incorrectly

I sign it last, or at least try too. Sometimes I admit that I sign it first, but I really try not to make it a habit.

Whenever I right a cheque, I first of all put the date on it. Then I put the payees name on it and then fill in the amount. My signature is the last to go on it except when I need to cross it. I would never endorse a cheque until I am ready to either lodge it to the bank or cash it. Like you say, it is not safe as I have a habit of losing things and if it was found by somebody who was dishonest, they would have no trouble cashing it.
