hi. i had a basset hound and her name was Martha. She's cuddly, grumpy and so lovable. it's just that she had this unpredictable temper. they said bassets are child-friendly but i guess it's a case to case basis. that pic you posted looks just like my pet, white-brown. gee i miss her so much.

by the way, may i just add....according to my dog trainer, bassets are basically stubborn and hard to teach new tricks for some reason.

bassets are loyal. when i eat, mine sits beside my feet. or while watching tv she sleeps behind my legs. when someone knocks at the door she doesn't know, she barks or growls. when a member of the family arrives, she gets excited. when someone leaves the house, she waits at the door til that someone comes back home. that's it. basically they are loyal & sweet :)

thank you for your advise there foxybrown. here's my definition of calm anyway : sitting a lot like an old one, but bark or howl sufficiently, playing is optional. trick? sitting and watching tv, pretend to listen is enough for me :) how dyou suggest?

Basset hounds are pretty easy going. If you want your dog to be calm right off the bat, you should adopt an older dog, since all puppies are pretty energetic and rambuncious, regardless of their breed. Most dogs really calm down when they are around two or three years old and are still very trainable at that age. YOu also get to skip the chewing and housebreaking stages (most of the time). Good Luck with you new dog (when you get him/her).

Hmmm...how should I answer this? :) We have a 4-year-old basset named Georgia, adopted as an adult. Her owner gave her up because she couldn't deal with her excitability. (That, and she was going thru cancer treatment and was also a new mom.) With some steady training, Georgie did eventually calm down-although she's still very bouncy with new people. They're a very sweet, loyal breed-Georgie must know where my husband is at all times, else she whines. And whines...I've been told by other basset owners that she will calm down more with age-bassets aren't really "grown-up" until they're 2 years old. They're stubborn as all get out, and can be difficult to housebreak. And they're notorious thieves. Oh the stories I could tell...lol. Lots of patience and especially a great sense of humor are required. Lest any of this sounds negative-I can tell you that for all the trials and tribulations, we wouldn't trade Georgie for the world. For further info-I recommend looking for the Daily Drool, a basset message board.

Well, if you ant a calm dog..they sleep ALOT! LOL! Cannot get more calm than that. When awake, they will play with you or cuddle. But they prefer to sleep.
