'Telecommuting' refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

Telecommunication over here is like telemarketers and they are a pain sometimes BUt I have worked in that feild and I like it. BUt is has got so bad no one hardly answeres the phone any more I dont and if I do I have fun with them. as Far a compouters go seems like every thing over here is run by them they are every where and If a mistake is made they say no mastake is made for the y put it on the computer but people have to work these computers so there is a human err in there . But mostly they are fast and efficent and they havent taken any jobs away the people just have to learn to work with them

Growth in jobs through telecommunication will have very positive effects on the society.More and more people will choose to work from home and the office culture will slowly go downhill. We can spend more time with our family. It could mean that parenting will become a little easier even if both the parents are working. It would also mean less lawsuits of dricrimination and harrassment at workplace. In fact, I think with telecommunication reaching it's full potential and web2 becoming popular we will see more entrepreneurs world over that would mean more job opportunities for people.

If Telecommuting relates to most of the work from home jobs, it will help many of the house wifes to be financially secured and don't have to depend on their husband for money for the house... If Telecommunting increases to a greater extent there will be less people who will need to travel long distances for work and thereby decreasing traffic and increasing income and standard of living of the people...

yep especially for older people who find it hard to get around. I am almost completely housebound now. It is like we are modernizing but going back to the old days when people worked from home, sewing clothes and stuff. It those days it was called a cottage industry.

Hey 4S This topic is close to my heart b/c I am a telecommuter-I think it's a great thing the only downfall is I have no benefits b/c most telecommute positions require you to be an independant contractor-I understand why they do this but it will have an adverse affect on the health care situation in our country- I haven't been for a check up since I started working from home over 2 years ago |:X +'s 2 U

Oh yes well this is very true as we can see exactly what has happened already in my country that their are more people joining the internet and running their own business from home and so I can see no change in this and that society will be accepting more of the way we do our work and make it a lot easier for everyone that wants to work from home.

I think that there will be less socializing with colleagues from work unless the company provides company get togethers every so often. There will be different designs in homes as we are already starting to see with home offices and home theaters. I think the home will play a more important role. I also think that neighbors will get to know each other better because they will be home more. That is all that comes to mind right now.

It might cut down on violence, then again if not everyone has the same opportunities to work online the division will continue to be a problem. I think that there will always need to be people to be in factories and warehouses to some degree. So will delivery be needed to be done by people in some capacity. It all depends on robotics and computers. We could end up a leisure society with the robots and computers doing all the heavy stuff and we need only to monitor. It remains to be seen.

When gas prices go up to $7-8 a gallon, telecommuting will become even more popular. I think it is an excellent wave for the future. It will save tons of energy, is actually a "green" solution, allows people to be at home to tend to things, will cut down on road traffic, and help to expand the Internet and make it more secure. It offers many great solutions to some of our more pressing problems.

as the technology changes it affects in both ways good and bad...as working through telecommunication we can save our valueable timings and people can earn maximum thru smart and max work also...but before saving time and earning money we should remember that we also have to participate in social issues as people go to the office have more people arround them and then more social network which also includes friends too...here the meaning of a internet friend is somewhat virtual as per my thinking.....so the telecommunicating is the same branch of the tree........so still have to think lot before step in.........cheers

I think that we as a society will become more and more isolated. Think about it, we can work from home, we can buy anything we need via the internet and have it delivered, we can communicate with our friends and family via the internet. Why do we even have to leave the house? If we home school our kids, they can do everything over the internet. Heck, you can even go to college via the internet. We are losing our social skills and relying more and more on technology. What happens to us if one day all the techonology just stops working? Do we end up like the people in an Outer Limits epidode? Everyone lived in a tiny cube like apartment and did everything via the computers. The computers even took care of the aprartment buildings and no one ever left their apartments. No one even knew what their neighbors or parents looked like as babies were created in labs and then computers raised them. Then one day, the computers stopped working. People had to get out and no one knew what to do or how to interact with each other. It was scary.

Telecommuting is a great idea. I would love a job like that, to not have to drive to work saves gas and time. Where I live, most people have to drive at least 30 minutes to get to work. It takes even longer if it's snowing or if the roads are icy. My daughter used to work from home part of the time. She liked working from home, but also liked going in to the office a couple of times a week to see everyone.

Telecommuting is a good idea & it did change the lives of Many people as they were able to get the information just sitting at home. The Advancement of Technology today is so great & vast that it has broken the boundaries of various nations & anyone can communicate with any person just by sitting at home or even in the Office. As regards to working from home is surely a good thing for those who have someone at home who need to be taken care of. It has become an integral tool of everyone's lives that those using it just cant live without it. But this does have lot of advantages & disadvantages In terms of advantages you can do work leisurely just by sitting at home & at the same time doing your house work as well. you can even take care of the your family & everything. The advantages is not limited to what i said above but there can more as well.. Coming to disadvantages it doesn't create the type of Working atmosphere that will be there in the office & sometimes in some cases it could also happen that the given assignment may not get completed in time & there can be certain delays. As & when the technology grows the needs of people grow & doing the work just sitting at home is one of those things which would have a higher preference. But eventually it can be said that for now telecommuting is good but can become quite a task as well.

communications, computers - modern technology as use as a tool to work online
I does affect a lot, it lessens the time of going to work on certain days and saves a lot of gas and money and clothes and most of all it makes you closer to your family having done work at home only.

Well, for one, the effects would be the same effects if people would just be working from home. Perhaps obesity would be at its rise, as well as laziness. Hehe. There would be less social interaction in the workplace which should be healthy. Well, on the positive side, people would be able to manage their time well, especially in the case of mothers who could still be able to manage the household (or watch their kids) while working. There would be also less risk of accidents or even job-related occupational hazards, less stress (with not having to deal with the boss all the time), and less conflict that may arise between co-workers. There would also be less road traffic if many people would be telecommuting! In my case, I would still rather go out and work. Happy myLotting!

There will be several advantages adn good things from this liek less commuters so less CO2 is released people will be able to work more flexable hours, more home time with family, less need for work cloths or a vehicle to travel to work. Sending documents eletronically will ease up demand on paper adn less trees will need to be cut. Some disadvantages would be shop keepers in buisness areas will have less customers, gas stations may need to be relocated casue of less commuters , transit may become more expensive due to less ridership. Longer time to get responses to e-mails becuase everyoen will be working different hours or people will be working more becasue others will need to get in touch with them on there off hours. Companies may decide they do not need big offices adn places of work so they will have workers store files at there place and that will involve printing. Thsi is one of those thigns taht can do soem good but more harm to society as a whole.
