Prayer and Kids ~ Do you teach your kids to pray........

Do you teach your kids to pray before bed, before meals, as soon as they wake up, or before a test? Do you think our society looks down on us if you do? I would like your opinion.

Yes, I am a firm believer in prayer, throughout the day and always at bedtime. I have tried to instill in my little brother(I have taken care of him since our mother had a stroke, he is 12 now) good values and the importance of prayer, especially before he goes to bed. I feel that this helps children to grow up being grateful and happier with their lives...also hope is a big thing for a child to have and keep with them. I don't really think society looks down on us, but I admit that it can feel strange if you are around people that don't have the same beliefs as you do.

It is good that we remember the importance of prayer. It may be uncomfortable at times to be around people who don't share our beliefs, but remember that when Jesus roamed the earth, he didn't stay in the homes of priests...he stayed in homes of ordinary people.

I don't do this and always feel guilty when I watch a movie and see that someone else took the time to do this with their children . I believe in God but don't take much time to discuss this with my children . I am not real sure why I don't but guess that they will end up with their own idea's and thoughts when they are older about how they feel as I have often been told that the way I feel is not the way of the religion that I am in . I made sure to have my children baptized because to me it would make me feel that they would not be accepted if I didn't in the eye's of God but don't feel that they are going to believe everything I say and so I guess for this reason I don't waste the time , but do feel it is a good idea for all those that do and don't feel that this is anything that anyone should put down on for those that do as this is parents spending quality time with their children and trying to explain something that is very important to them in life and this can never be considered as a reason to look down on someone . Anyone who would look down on someone who did this would only be jealous about what they are not doing themselves or too pig headed to realize that this is a good thing and truely none of their buisness . It is the people who feel that they are better in life that look down on others for decision they have made in life or for what they wear , how they act or what they do .

Thank you for responding. I realize that many people believe in God, but don't take the time to instill traits like prayer or reading the Bible. I think it is our responsibility as parents to teach our kids about religion and prayer.

We teach our children to pray. Our 1 year old and 5 year old love to pray. My daughter by the age of 17 mths could memorized grace before meals and our son who is 5 knows the Lord's Prayer. I really do not care what society thinks of us, I only care about us giving God the glory and giving Him thanks for all that he has done for us.

I don't have children, but my parents were ardent about teaching us to 'pray without ceasing.' Every day was an open ended prayer for me. It kind of still is. I will say 'Amen' after a prayer, but I know I'll be talking to the Lord long before bedtime.

I know what you mean. Maybe instead of "Amen", we should say, "Till later!"

When my kids were little or young I didn't pray much myself and didn't teach my children I'm sorry to say. Now I do teach my grandchildren and the 2 that live close and I see alot have gone to church with me many times - the 4 year old tells everyone 'that's grandma and me's church' when they pass my church... Yes, I am sure there are people who look down on us for praying but know what? I don't care, when out at a resturant I do pray before my meals even if I'm alone. I have noticed people watching and I include a silent prayer for the ones who seem 'offended'. If they don't like it they don't have to watch.

I love that your 4 year old grandchild is able to experience that with you. I was raised in church with my grandma, so I too, have my gradma and my church, I still get to say that to my children when we visit the small town I grew up in.

I don’t have kids yet but I have nephews and nieces and whenever they sleep over at our place, I always remind them to say their prayers before going to bed. I don’t know why society would look down on us if we teach our children to pray, I think prayer is a good value and should be taught to kids.

My cchildren were pretty old when I became serious about God much to my shame. They were to old to think that I knew any thing by then. I have taught my grandchildren to pray. We always pray when we eat out.

Many people think that because they didn't teach their kids as children, that it is too late. We are never too old to be examples. I hear this alot! As parents, we are always examples to our children even if we live to be 100 years. My grandmother is 86 and I am extremely impressed by her dedication to GOD. She has been deeply dedicated ever since I remember.

i dont have kids but i have 2 neices and 1 nephew. and i know my sister has them pray before they eat and when they go to bed. she really doesnt have to tell them they do it on there own. im so blessed to see it. there only 5,4,3 years old. just to see them so little and have a understanding of prayer is such a blessing. i really think society looks down on people when we pray. when my family and i eat out we always pray before we eat and you can just see the people around us just looking at us weird for it. but i dont care cause i love my lord and will always proclaim his name. maybe someone seeing me will open doors for them to get to know god.
