Cell Phones for Children???

I have seen way too many young children carrying cell phones around lately. I mean 8 and 9 year-old children. Do you feel that children so young need or should have a cell phone? Why or why not?

My nephew that is 8 and has one doesn't even use it except to impress everyone with all the ring tones and playing games. My 11-year-old nephew that has one uses it occasionally but does not abuse it in any way. Maybe age isn't really the issue, but maturity.

Cellphones in schools are forbidden... It is reasonable because it is pretty distracting especially if a kid is pretty addicted to text... we have plenty of text addicted kids here in the philippines and it is really disturbing, my niece is only 6 yrs. old and she already have a cellphone, but in her case it is quite useful because she is the only child and both of her parent goes to work so basically she needs cellphone to contact her parent.. Cellphones need limitations... and it is sad to say kids are kids... you can give and set a limit.. but some of them just can't follow it...

Cell phones are not allowed at our schools here in Georgia either. It can be very distracting. I see your niece having a good reason to carry one though.

There was a time I thought this was ridculous and crazy, letting young kids have cell phones but then cell phones bug me to begin with - people are so rude with them. I however did allow my son to get one when he was 12. He used his birthday money to buy the phone, one of those pay as you go things. I do help him with time for his phone but he has to put up at least half of the money. I agreed to and do this because it is a way to keep in touch with him. We have it worked out that if I call he won't answer (doesn't get charged time for that) but he gets home As Soon AS Possible. As for 8 and 9 year olds I've seen ones for kids that they can only call certain numbers - I like that for safety reasons but kids not being able to just be on the phone all the time. You can set it so they can call home, mom & dad, emergancy contacts.

I knew I'd get a good answer from you as always. People can be rude when using them. I like that your son is learning some responsibility with his phone and your allowing him to take ownership and participate in paying is teaching him a valuable lesson as well. I want to look into those phones that will only call certain numbers. That sounds like a good alternative to the traditional cell phone. Thanks.

I don't think they really need it that much. I admit even me..a 16 yr old student really doesn't need it that much. I just communicate with friends, listen to songs and camera for my phone but then the basic reason for having a cellphone is really not met. I don't have much people to talk to.

I can actually see a 16 year old needing a cell phone. You are old enough to drive and might want to let your parents know when you are running late. If you are involved in school activities etc. you might need to let someone know if you are finishing earlier or later than necessary. I don't really see how many people at age 8 or 9 have that many people to talk to.

I don't see why someone that young would need a cell phone either. I agree with you.
