Do You Clip Coupons For Groceries?

I have mixed feelings about using coupons. On the one hand, they can save you money, especially if you go to a store that offers double coupons. On the other hand, I have found that I wind up spending more on things I really don't use, but had a coupon for it and bought it anyway. Do you do this also or do you swear by coupons to save money at the grocery store?

OMG - I swear by coupons. I dont know if you have the double coupon option where you are from, but here in Maine I shop at Shaws. They have a system that they double any coupon under a dollar. So I watch the weekly flyers and clip every coupon I come across and do my shopping that way... I normally save 60% on my grocery bill and to me that is huge we are a one income family of 4 so any corner I can cut to save a penney I am on it. :)

Hi wachit14. No I don't always use coupons but I know that they can save you a good amount of money. We all agree that the purpose of using coupons is saving money therefore if you end up buying things that you don't need then you are wasting money. Some people buy things because they are on sale. But if they will never use them then they are doing the opposite: they are not saving but spending money! So I think we have to only use the coupons for rthings we need if we really want to save money. I'm going to get into the habit of using coupons and I will have to learn to get organized.

I used to use coupons all the time so my hubby goes to the store now and I have been trying to tell him to use the coupons but he won't listen.

I usually make my grocery list first, then check the coupons out. We don't get a paper delivered, because both the BF and I get our news online. I check the "coupon stand" at my grocery store before I start shopping. Often I find a few good coupons for things I know I need on the list. Sometimes, I find a coupon for something I like but don't need, and I usually buy that as well. My grocery (HEB) store does lots of things called "meal deals" where you buy one or two items -- like meat and cheese or a veggie -- and get other items for free. Usually it's drinks and breads for free. While I am usually not a big fan of one or two of the free items, they are really good deals. I'll buy it if I know the BF likes the item I don't, or if it's just a canned item I can drop off at the donation drum. If I clipped coupons from the paper, it would probably be harder for me to say to myself "no, I don't need that". Something about being at the store with my list in hand strengthens my resolve.
