Just why do we have pets anyway?

This might be more of a rhetorical question..hehehe...but since there are so many pet owners out there, just why do you have a pet? Is it because you somehow want to feel a connection with the animal world? Do you view your pet as family member, or substitue child? Do they fill a void in your life and need the companionship?? With me I think it's a bit of all three--I've been surrounded by pets quite literally all my llife and can't think or imagine life without a furry friend....although I've even had birds and pet mice during the years. So....why do you have a pet or pets..and have you alway had them in your life?

Learning to share love, provide affection, and give attention to a pet are three qualities that enhance the personal quality of human life. Pets give you unquestioning, unbridled, unwavering love and continual daily companionship. For me is all above and also increased sense of security…. at some point my dogs will probably need protection because they are small but at least they can bark….. My pets are definitely family members and no questions about it.

Well, I never owned a dog until I was twelve, and even then I had to fight to get one. Currently, I have two puppies and I love them so very much. The rest of my family aren't pet people, but they are fond of my two dogs. So why do I have a pet? Because they speak to my heart, and I know I have plenty of love to give them. They bring me joy I cannot equal in other places, and they love more unconditionally than humans. They also make me more aware of the simple pleasures in life. I'd like to think that loving my animals makes me even more capable of loving the humans in my life. : )

I just love animals, and that is the reason I have them. I grew up without any, as my mom was scared of them. I just adore and respect them so much. They also are wonderful companionships that give unconditional love. I rated you another + for a great posting. Keep it up.

Why thank you margieanneart! :-) You're the opposite of me in a way...I was surrounded by animals even when I was in my mom's womb!! LOL My father's side of the family raised and breed hunting dogs..so even before I was born there were pets...then I have this vintage photo of me..can't be more than a year old..I'm sitting on the living room floor and right next to me is a monster of a dog--LOL--that actually took great faith in my folks I guess..faith in the dog that it wouldn't bite me, and faith in me that like most little kids wouldn't yank at its tail.

Solo at 3 days old - my "grandson"
They are definitely part of my family & my substitute children. I call my 2 bottle babies, my sons (well, they have both been boys) and Solo, who I saved both him & his mom's life when I picked her up the day before she had to have a c-section to deliver her kitten, I call my grandson. That is not to say that I don't love some of the rest just as much, but I did have less of a hand in the raising of them.

Oh my--I looked at Solo's pic..boy does that bring back memories for me...I've had my share of newborn kits and often had to bottle fed as well...I've had both my Kissy and Pyewacket since they were born--I look at pics I took of all my cats over the years the same way people do with their kids...LOL--and it does bring memories

Pretty good pix taken by the blind chick. Its a little close & blurry, but not bad. Solo was as big as a week old kitten at 3 days - no wonder mom, how was a teenage mother anyway & tiny, couldn't deliver him on her own. She only weighed 5 & a half pounds when he was born. She only weighed 6 when he was 5 months old & weighed 6 lbs himself. He stopped about 14 lbs, he'll be 3 in June.

I've always loved all pets and animals since I was a very little girl. In fact, my first pets were two rats when I wasn't even two or three years old yet. And of course we owned a dog and a cat at the same time, but those weren't mine exclusively. And after the rats, I got my guinea pig. :) Now my pets are my hamster, Smokey, my dog, Tucker, and my kitten, Kenya. My newest little baby is the kitten. I got her Christmas and she was recently spayed about a week ago. I love her with all my heart, ever since I first set my eyes on her. She's from the shelter and she was being shown off in PetSmart one weekend before Christmas. I was so happy when I received her and I don't know what I'd do without her. She brings me such joy! I love so many things about owning pets. They're part of my family, they're like my babies. I like to know that they look up to me and they need me to love and take care of them. That no matter what I do they will always be there for me and always love me. People aren't like that, people hold grudges. My pets do not. Sometimes I think animals have more love than many people do. I like knowing that I can always come home and have a little bundle of fur that will be waiting for me. Waiting for me to feed it, love it, and take care of it. Then cuddle up with me to sleep at night. Owning a pet requires a lot of love and responsibility and I like being able to provide that for my pets. Without owning an animal, I would definitely feel empty inside.

I have a dog to keep the house safe. That was our family's main intention, but now this dog is a part of the family. I always had a pet. Actually, only two dogs. But we always had.

I think its like asking someone why they want to have babies. Its something you love and cherish and you want to share it with someone else. I don't thinks so we need pets for anyother reason except love.

With me I view my pets as family members, I enjoy taking care of them and they definitely feel a void in my life that a child cannot take care of it for me. I have pets as long as I can remember and I can't see my life without a pet in it, they bring me so much joy I would hope to never live my life without a pet in it.

I think pets are as good for us and we are for them. I think the bond we share with pets is fulfilling some need we might have for something else. Or its just to love and care for one of Gods creatures. Either way, I love pets. I just owned a dog and cat for years. Now as of Tuesday I own a hamster. Very different but very cute. So now I have 3 pets. My sister got 2 african dwarf frogs and 2 fish. They all live in the same tank, no touchy. But still they are cute. But something about "touching" a pet makes it mean more. I love pets. I think they rock. I dont know what life would be without them. Very sad indeed. Even in bible days they talked about having dogs.

Honestly, I've always been an animal lover and I've had quite the menagerie during the years lol. I've had tropical fish, I've bred Gerbils, I've bred Guinea Pigs, I've had dogs, I've even had a pair of Lionhead rabbits and a pair of young Belgian hares! Right now though I have a Cat. We got her because I suffer from Clinical Depression, and because I refused anti depressants, myself and my doctor were coming up with different forms of therapy. I mentioned Pet Therapy just as a joke, and to my surprise he took me seriously and said it might be worth a try. The rest is history. We adopted our Cat last October, and paid for her to stay in Shelter till we found a new home because our stickler of a landlord wouldn't allow a cat. We rushed around for close to 2 months to find somewhere that allowed pets and found somewhere right in the nick of time! We will have had her for 6 months on the 1st of May. Time has flown. She is a true member of our family and none of us would ever be without her. She was initially for me, but she has stolen everyone's hearts.

People don't realize how therapuetic pets can be for a person sometimes better medicine than a prescription--I have to laugh though..and really Kudos to you....you rather have moved and found a new home that accepted pets, then stay put with a landlord that didn't want pets...that's priceless!! ;-)

PS--I also understand why you might not want to take medication for your depression..I have panic disorder and don't take meds myself,...I'm trying to use behavioral therapy techniques to overcome it instead--and as far as pets..they have been found to reduce stress in a person

When I was little, my dad always had dogs. He raised beagles, but they were always kept outdoors. I used to go sit in the cage with them for hours just to keep them company and vice versa. I grew up wanting to be a vet because I go along so well with animals. In all my growing up years we never had a house pet. So that was the first thing I did, I wanted a cat though because they are more independant and take care of themselves unlike dogs. My cat is like another family member now. She is currently laying on her pillows on my bed snoring. A man could do that too, but they are a lot of work even more so than dogs.

Pets are companions that never betray you and that are allways there to comfort you or play with. They are a part of the family, in their own unique way (or so I feel). They make the house more lively. I've had cats, dogs and rats in my life. I like cats best, I feel connected to them. They can be very cuddly but also are very independent.

Pets exists because anybody who is living by themselves need a cat or dog for companion and to converse with.People have always had a strong urge to nurture animals.Human-pets do not require the same efforts as human-human ones, but the rewards are love, gratitude, fun, and companionship. The soothing stroking of an animal provides comfort and relief from the demands of human relationships.

we have pets i think as stress relievers. they come to you and you can pat them and play with them all you want. i have a really cute shih tzu at home and it's really nice to know someone is always happy about your arrival(the dog). and he never fails to see me at the door everytime i come home.

I think thse days people have pets mostly just because they enjoy having them around. They are great stress relievers and they reciprocate our love and affection unconditionally.
