Heard it countless times as I was growing up, and never liked it to much. Or maybe I never allowed myself to really hear it, not long enough to appreciate it. It wasn't fashionable then for the younger to enjoy this kind of music. At that age we were supposed to enjoy the new groups coming from outside, the new rhythms, "modern" music, not that old stuff called fado, with mournful tunes and lyrics. That was something for the old people:) Well I guess I'm well on my way to qualify as an old person and I finally stopped and listened. And I am now sorry that it took me so long. Is it the music? The beautiful sound of the Portuguese guitar? The performances filled with emotion? The way each singer interprets the same fado? The long dresses? The tears coming along with the song sometimes?I'm not really sure, but now that I started really listening I find that Fado touches me deeply. Have you ever heard of it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTiDK05RuC8

I am not a real fan of Fado, I live in Portugal. I like this song and some others of her but not sure if it would be considered Fado or not but it is a real famous Portuguese song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP6ofmjFh5Y

I confess, it wasn't my kind of music either, for many, many years. It still surprises me that I am actually enjoying it now LOL as I said earlier maybe you need to reach a certain age to start appreciating it:) The one you linked here is a beautiful one for sure, and yes it's fado.

I meant to ask you. Is it still the same thing in Portugal, where the younger generation doesn't really appreciate fado that much and the older generation is more in touch with this kind of music? That's the way it used to be when i was there, and maybe a reason why I didn't like it before :)

Yip, Fado is considered to be more the old people's songs here, most of the time any hows. One of the most famous is the deceased Amalia Rodrigues amongst the older people.

No I have never heard of Fado. I guess it is something you would only learn about when you get to know some one who is Portuguese. My niece actually dates a guy that is Portuguese. I am not sure if he is first or second generation. When I see him next I will have to ask him if he listens to this kind of music.

I forgot to add that nowadays Fado is pretty much known in some other areas other than Portugal. I heard it in England and I heard it here in Canada. I was surprised at first when I realized that a big majority of the public was not Portuguese people or descendants but english or Canadian in the cases of the concerts I've seen.

I am spanish , so as you can imagine yes, i have heard about fados a lot of times. It's a really mournful, sad music, but it's elegant in a way too, very smooth and such. I have been in portugal recently, and i liked the experience, hadn't been there yet, which was a shame...i think fados are a good thing that portuguese people should try to export more.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Portugal:) I was very surprised to know that a lot of people outside Portugal likes fado when I learned it the firs time. That's when I didn't like it LOL But now it doesn't surprise me. There really is something to it.

I've only heard Fado a few years ago and I kind of like it. Being of Portuguese descent but living far away from Portugal, I have grown to like it although it is somewhat melancholy. I think it was started long long time ago when the families of the Portuguese discoverers went away for years and the sadness was brought out through these songs. I just saw a documentary on Portugal tonight and realised that Fado is like the Blues where people sing what they are feeling. It's nice and unique!

Yes, like the blues...in a very special way. TO be honest, that sadness was one of the things that used to put me off fado. That and the fact that people my age weren't supposed to like it LOL Come to think of it, even last year I was making fun of hubby for listening to fado! And then suddenly - or maybe because when hubby listens to it I usually do to - I just started listening and enjoyed it.
