How to keep my son entertained for five hours?

My son and I are taking the Amtrax train to New Haven, Connecticut to visit with my Aunt and Uncle on Wednesday and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I can keep my son entertained for five hours straight. I'll take some of his favorite books to read, and ones to color in, as well as a few small toys he can play with. I'm wondering whether that is enough to keep him entertained?

When we go for long cr rides I like to let the kids take a toy or two each to playwith. Also they love to color so we buy them the color wonder color books to take with us. The markers dont write on anything but the paper!! So he wouldnt be able to draw on the train, or himself, and it would keep him busy! A snack is a great idea as well as some juice. Good luck to you!

Thanks copperkitten for your comment and I'll look into the color wonder color books and markers. I wonder if they sell them at the dollar shops?

No they dont seel them at the dollar stores. You have to go to wal-mart or kmart. The books come with 6 markers and cost around 5-6$.

dear friend, its a good idea to take some toys and books for your son. I do the same things when i travelled with my son. By my experience i can say children like small things which they can manupulate easily. also keep some snacks for him. However children gets easily bored so talked to him in between the journey I mean be avilable for him and show him the sight seens if possible. OK have a nice journey. bye.

Bringing things for him to do is an excellent idea . You could also try bringing something for him to munch on as well as children often get hungry while driving just because they are bored and it gives them something to do . On long trips like this I usually try to play games with my children such as picking out things they have to find along the way . If you son likes music you could bring some of this along for him to listen to as well . Best of luck and have fun :)

oh yes I forgot to mention that I will be bringing along munchies for him. He has a power ranger carry bag that he likes to fill with goodies now and then. My son loves music too so thats a great idea, I'll charge up the ipod and load it with children's songs and some of his favourites - oh he will like that! Thanks for your comments :)
