Replying to old discussions vs starting new ones

Is it good to respond to old discussions or is it better start a new one, even if the same topic exists? Say for example I want to reply to a 3-month old discussion, but I'm not sure if anyone would bother checking replies to it anymore. Is it okay to start a new discussion, even if it is similar to an old one?

I think responding to old discussions will surely help the site with the maintenance and what's the point in having many same topics around.. We could just have it in one discussions but if you opt for a new one then you could start one with different issues. I'm sure the one who started the discussion will really took the time to check it out.. =)

Sometimes I see old discussions started by users with low amounts of posts, I'm not so sure if they would check back, especially if they have like 5 posts and the topic is 3 months old.

I think it depends...Because if the topic is interesting, then it would be nice to respond to it, though it is old already...

It's OK to start repeated topics as every topic under the sun was already started here in mylot before, if you will only post something 100% new then no one will be able to post new discussions anymore.. It's just about how you handle the topic, be creative and try to write it from a different angle and use your own words. of course I would not advice anyone to re-post silly discussions like "what's your favorite color" or "what is your favorite pizza" only worthwhile topics worth restarting again..

I suggest start a new one but with more creative ideas so that it would sound similar to the old discussion.
