i just bought a brand new 'Acer' laptop.which is aspire 5050 series.i recommend acer if you are a budget concious buyer because acer come with all features like wi-fi,dual layer dvd writer, duocore procesor with 64 bit,and many more feature comparaatively cheaper than any other brand. my acer config is AMD turion 1.6GHz Duo core 64,1GB DDR2 RAM,ATI 1100 Gfx with PS2.0,Dual layer DVD writer,120GB HDD,wi-fi,card reader, bth, integrTED WEBCAM. and the price difference compared to other brand is about 8-10000 INR! sony vaio is best performance laptop among all lap!

It seems your needs could easily be met by any of the laptops featured in your local Best Buy or Circuit City circular. You'll need 1.7 ghz or up, and you might want 512 MB RAM (XP is a resource HOG). Pick something light (8 lbs or less), with at least a CD-ROM. Most laptops come with some type of ability to connect to the internet, so it would be more difficult to find one without it. You never know, wireless might come in handy some day. 12-14" screen oughta do it. For what you need, you shouldn't have to pay more than $500-$800. Good luck!
