So Sad

May 6, 2007 9:06am CST
Went into one of the local pet stores over the weekend to look at fish as I was looking at re-stocking the tank with tropical fish. I was very dishartened to what I found they had! There was a cage quite close to the stairs with a pair of chipmunks in. One of these creatures was quite calm, the other one really disturbed me to see! He/she was running at the rails going totally mad! Running around the rails frantically trying to get out! its eyes where rolling! I told the owner of the shop what I was seeing and they said that I had not to worry as this was normal behaviour for chipmunks! He seemed not to care at all! All he was interested in! Is what money he could rake in! I contacted the RSPCA about my find! So hope they went to do something for this poor stressed creature! Hope I did the correct thing there! I know one thing! I wont be going in there again for items. Cant stand animal cruelty. Lynn-Marie

erm.. well.. i think the pet shop owner is just too money minded.. from the beginning.. they didn't even want to care about the animals that they're selling.. all they see is money.. and animals are just like products to them.. if the product is useful.. they will keep it and sell.. if it's useless.. they will throw it somewhere.. that's how some pet owner actually kill or throw pets that are injured or about to die.. do you agree? i seriously think the RSPCA or any animal agency should do something about it.. animals have the right equal with humans.. do you agree?

I agree with you there on that one! Would they like to be sat in that cage with people pointing at them, poking thier fingers through the cage and the likes. Heres hoping that the RSPCA will have checked them out by now. Lynn-Marie

that is sad that the worker there would not do anything to help and I do hope that the RSPCA goes and check it out. we have a pet store here but many people dont buy the pets because most of them are sick or something wrong with them.

I felt this individual animal could have been sick with something caused by the captivity. Same here! I too hope the RSPCA goes and checks them out Lynn-Marie

Wow thats horrible! I didnt think they'd cage such a thing that should be wild. I guess some people think anything wild can be used as a pet. They have hamsters, mice, rats, fish, cats, dogs, why not a chipmunk? But if they are going crazy and it could be illegal, reporting it is a good thing.

That is awful. It's owners like that who give pet stores in general a bad reputation. You did the right thing in reporting them. I hope those poor animals are taaken away very soon.

Thats what I am hoping! Looking at how stressed the poor chipmunk looked racing in that cage with his/her eyes rolling looked as if it was going through some form of mental torture by being there! Lynn-Marie

Poor creature. But what's really disturbing here is the fact that the owners treat the incident so casually. Normal behavior or not, they should have at least taken action to put the animal at ease (even just for the sake of their customers). For a petshop owner to display such neglective behavior is off-putting for their customers, who are people who love animals and expect to own or be amused by them (that's why they walked into the shop in the first place). Yeah, don't go in there again.

That is one of the reasons why I hate pet shops, because the animals are only pound notes especially to the smaller pet shops. Places like Pet City and Petland are far better. Although I alway get my animals from animal rescue centres. Good for you for reporting him. I hate seeing animals in cages FULL STOP, it's cruel and no wonder the animal/s are stressed. Wouldn't you be in a cage no where to go with people staring at you all the time. Hope the RSPCA take action.

It is quite common behavior for chipmunks though, can see it in pet stores here as well. They simply shouldn't be held as pets in small cages, they're not meant to live in a cage but need space. Pretty much like hamsters, if you don't give them a running wheel they either grow really fat or they become utterly wild. Some creatures simply need there space to get rid of their energy just like humans do.

Just hate to see any animal in a lot of stress like this poor creature looked to be. I agree they need a lot of space to run. Lynn-Marie
