Are people losing their desire to type and spell properly? I can understand abbreviations like 'LOL' and 'WTF' because they're fairly common, and as much as it annoys me, I can even understand it when people shortform some words when they text me, but why shortform 'People' to 'Ppl' when you're typing on your computer? And what in the world is the purpose of abbreviating 'you' (a fairly short word anyway) to 'u'. It's just dumb. I've read at least 20 discussions with no responses in the last 10 minutes that I actually had to pause to figure out WTF people were trying to say. :)

Its true its some times kind of annoying how people type.I think they uses chatting lingo in paragraphs which is quiet disturbing. In sms or text messages or in chatting it looks okay but in discussion where so many peoples join if it is not understandable its worthless.

Apparently, intelligence isn't cool, so they have to type like they're complete idiots. Some people think it's cute, I just think that it's a complete and total disrespect- not only to themselves, but to everyone who is reading it.

You made me smile - I cannot agree with you more! While I do use some short forms when I text on my mobile or when I IM on yahoo, I too cannot understand why people use it here; my guess is that they are simply too lazy to write the full form. It is annoying, you are right not to mention that it takes the fun/seriosity out of the discussion.

I also have a hard time understanding the abbreviations of the words, Breepeace. One reason is that I do not text so I am unfamiliar with the text terms. I am glad to learn that someone else do not understand and does not like the short words.

lol wtf iz up wit dat? J/k, okay really just kidding, it really annoys me too! I aLsO hAtE iT wHeN PeOpLe TyPe LiKe ThIs! That takes so long to do, so why do people do that too? I think it's just from us texting and im'ing so much, it's quicker to do it that way but on mylot and other places it's more considerate to type out the words.

Totally agreed, or when they caps lock every other letter or word or whatever, I can't even read that! And the u drives me nuts too, is it that much harder to type you?! I don't get it, and it annoys me too, so at least you aren't alone!!

Exactly! How does "hOw R u?" become easier to type than, "How are you?". It looks dumb, too.

Well... I personally dont like using abbreviations in my language... It makes it look so unreal... I rather write a full sentence than writing few letters which are unmeaningful...

well its the way of the current generation i guess where everything is cut short and small is in.the worst part is that there have been so many short forms that it is difficult to figure out what they are actually trying to say.they can get really irritating at times.

I absolutely hate this kind of thing, txt spk. It seems so lazy and a lot of the time illegible too. The standards of adult literacy are falling, this is only one of the reasons why.

i think it originated from sms or text message wherein you abbreviate words so that it can fit into the 160 character limits of older cellphones. Yes it is irritating at times since you have to figure out what they are trying to say before you can actually respond, but that is the times and I think we should all just try to adapt as most of these words are fairly uniform in their abbreviations like as you've sampled. you becomes u, people become ppl, text becomes txt. Well, that's my thought on that ^_^

But you isn't spelled u. And it's simply lazy for people with a full keyboard in front of them to type it like that, especially when you're on a website like MyLot that pays for QUALITY content. I think I'll just stick to knowing how to spell.

well usually people use this to communicate faster with other people. i use it for sending text messages to my friends. it comes in handy, but i hate it when people use it too much or use too little letters of the word. some times some people would say brb, or be right back, and when they would get back, the other person would type wb, welcome back. for the longest time i thought wb ment either write back, or something else.

I'm glad you mentioned this. This kind of thing is pretty annoying, and it does look stupid. It gives me a headache trying to read stuff like that, so I try to avoid reading it. I try not to respond to any discussions that are posted using these kinds of abreviations.

I don't even abbreviate like that when i'm text messaging. Just because i know what the abbrevation might mean doesn't mean the person I'm talking to does. It really just boils down to laziness, all those abbreviations look retarded. I think the only one i use is LOL.

I agree! I use LOL and NVW for nevermind when texting, but I have a BlackBerry with a full QWERTY keyboard, too, so I can afford to type things out in full. Even when I just had a regular cellphone I typed things out, though, too. I might abbreviate if I had a lot to say but 'How r u?'.. get real. Type it out. People are getting so lazy today.

i think those people are just lazy and already get use to the bad habit of using short form because they are using mobile phones to text so much i suppose... it really annoys me and i think it is rude to do that here... in sms, i can understand because we want to save time, space and money... but here??? i simply don't understand...

see thats just one way of looking at things..i am not saying you are wrong..and would also agree to the fact that it is sometimes very annoying..but the fact is that it is a bit more convenient to use..save a bit of time and in most cases gets the message across..agreed people should make a judgement where to use it and where not..otherwise must say its not so bad..

For the first question, "Are people losing their desire to type and spell properly?" The answer is "NO". They just want to be "IN" in the society. You may right that sometimes it is annoying when they shortterm the word in the discussion. With text or chat messages, i think using those LINGO words would be ok. Here in Philippines, if we don't abbreviate our words when texting, it will cost more.

yes this is the world of mail, chat, sms etc. So to send quick reply some people have found this stupid way og abbreviations. Really to read these is annoying. And sometimes it is difficult to understand also and you have to keep on guessing what it could mean. There are many examples of such short forms. The only reason can be is to not waste time and write fast. It is nice that you have raised this topic. Thanks.

Sometimes the abbreviations make me confused, because some abbreviations are used in special time or place. In Chinese(I am a Chinese.)language, some abbreviations are popular among young people but the real meaning of these words just can be understood by the youth. The older people cannot understand most of those abbreviations. For instance,my mum asked me an popular abbreviation on the T.V.set,I explained it to her.I told her I didn't know why people spelled word in that way but it was just a trendy among young gays!Sometimes the abbreviations and the idoms make me confused but what I will do is to accept them.

I sometimes get bothered when the messages I receive in my email are in shortened form. Here in the Philippines , considered as the Texting (SMS) Capital of the world due to the large volume of SMS transmissions and usage everyday, almost everyone uses this form of writing SMS. Sad to say that I encounter people, especially the young ones who send email and write letters this way. It really makes people dumb once you get used to writing in this manner.
