Do you throw out clothing as you lose or gain weight?

As some of you already know from other discussions, I started following the South Beach Diet on February 28th. So far, I've lost 20 pounds :) :) Over the weekend, I went through my tshirt drawer and decided I'd try a few on that didn't fit last year. Guess what???! YEP! They fit now! I'm very pleased because that will allow me to avoid shopping for awhile yet (I HATE shopping with a passion! LOL!) and I'll be able to treat myself to some new things once I get closer to my goal. This time, though, I threw away the biggest of the sizes I had stored in there. I don't want to keep them around and be tempted to wear them anymore. My hubby's tired of seeing my clothes "floating on me", he says LOL So what about you? Do you keep clothes in every possible size -- my mentality has always been "well at least there's always something that fits!" -- or do you get rid of clothes right away if they get too big or too small?

I´ve got some clothes which I bought eight or even more years ago. Some are becoming fashionable again, lol. When I gain weight it´s usually just one or two sizes more, so I´m not complaining. I always keep the clothes where I can´t pull the zip up anymore, because I might slim down again, which usually happens. This has saved me a lot of time shopping for clothes. With the clothes who don´t fit me anymore because they are too big, I usually take them in myself. You have certainly lost a lot of weight. I think it was a good idea to throw the "floating" stuff away. It might be helpful for you to know that you´re going to have to go shopping if you put on weight again. Congrats on your weight loss and your determination.

True, there are clogs in every shoe shop(again, lol) I hope the huge shoulderpads won´t have a comeback.

Thank you so much for your supportive response, dana! I really do appreciate it! How nice that all your wardrobe is becoming stylish again LOL What goes around, comes around, right? ;) I tell my daughters that I'll just keep my clothes because, some day in the future, they'll be wanting to wear the same things! I mean, I had clogs in high school and every shoe store I've been into lately has clogs on display LOL And that's just ONE example. I'm seriously hoping the plastic pocket jeans NEVER come back *grin*

No, of course not. You will never know when you might slim down again. You can use it as a motivation to slim down lol.

I try to get rid of things as I buy new things. There is no need to keep your "fat" clothes, lol. I tend to keep one or two things from my really skinny days, though-- to periodically try them on and see how far from my goal weight I am, lol. Last year my friend lost weight and she gave me a pair of pants that were too big for her. I was a tad insulted that she was giving me her "fat" pants (okay, they were a size 10). They were nice pants, but not really my style. Anyway, she as since gained her weight back and I have given the pants to Goodwill- I hope she doesn't ask me for them back!

Oh man, awonderfullife... I'm DREAMING of my "fat" pants being a size 10!!! LOL! I think I was born bigger than a 10... but I digress... I really do have to part with some things as I move along this journey of losing weight. I've been so many sizes in my lifetime and I need to get to one that I feel good about and vow to stay there! I know it's not easy but I know it's what I need to do this time. "Enough messin' around!!!" is what I keep telling myself in the mirror ;) Good idea on keeping a couple of small-sized items though... I have a couple of things from about three years ago that I'm aiming to fit into again. Not that I'll actually WEAR them... LOL... I just want to know that they fit!

LOL! Well I can definitely understand this! I just saved myself some money for awhile yet since I can fit back into what I couldn't wear last year at this time LOL Hopefully, enough time has passed and no one will remember those clothes anyway! It'll look like a different wardrobe ;)

Congratulations on successfully losing some weight. I keep all clothes, big or small, as long as it can still be worn. I do not wear fitting clothes as it is always more comfortable with bigger clothes especially on hot stuffy days. Hence, my clothes are of different sizes to suit my size as and when they grow :P

Thanks so much, whyaskq! I'm with you on the comfort! I don't like to feel every inch of my clothing against my skin, if you know what I mean? I've always liked things loose -- but I do admit that sometimes I go to the extreme and wear things that are much too big. But I'm learning! LOL

if the clothes are too big or too small - e bay them. try and get a little something for them. i try and sell them on e bay and if that fails them i pass them to a local charity shop.

You know, I've never sold anything on ebay... have been a purchaser (once! LOL) but that's it. I generally always donate but thank you for a very good suggestion! :)

I give away the clothes that I don't want anymore and keep the clothes that I really like. Because I don't want to gain or lose weight. If I gain I keep the clothes so that it will motivate me to lose alittle to stay the same size.

I have several sizes in my closet!LOL I lost 30 pounds last year and had to go down to some of my smaller sizes. Yeah! Than I got a Depo shot and I have put 20 back on. So I am back up again. It will take twice as long to get it off this time. I am a pack rat by nature so I do keep most of the different sizes.

I find that I keep all my clothes, regardless of whether or not they fit me. I know I shouldn't be so sentimental about my clothes and I know I have to clear out a load of clothes very soon, but there are some outfits I just can't bring myself to get rid of so they stay at the back of the wardrobe.

I know exactly what you mean, recycledgoth! I have a few work outfits left from when I was out in the rat race, rather than working from home, and I find that I can't let those go. I paid so much for clothing back then that it makes it even harder! Mind you, when I say that I "get rid of" or "throw clothing away," it doesn't actually go in the trash -- I donate all of it. So, I guess, someone would benefit by the work clothing if I could just part with it! :)

I change between a size 10 and 12 so I keep clothes in both sizes or I end up with clothes either falling off me or too tight. I hate having to buy size 12 clothes it makes me wish I was a size 10 again, but I soon lose wight again and can get back into my size 10 jeans again.

You should not throw them away just because you weight has changed. You should keep them since who knows you might still need them again later or you can donate them to those who may need them or send them away to some charity or something similar.

i keep all my clothes.. which is why I have tons and some are way too big and some are too small.. but I keep them because if I gain or lose weight I'll have them and if they're comfortable I dont want to get rid of them and have to buy more. I have waaaay too many clothes now though and i have to go through them and get rid of some of them or put them in bags and in the closet so I have room to put the stuff I wear all the time away.. I'm a pack rat. LOL

LOL! I understand completely! I always wear my clothing baggy because I find it comfortable but my husband reminds me that I should at LEAST be able to feel fabric against my skin now and again LOL I feel good about getting rid of a few items though... I guess it's more about keeping myself motivated this time ;)
