can you really express your real views on social networking sites, like Mylot

Social networking sites are an increasingly popular place to make friends and chat but can you really be honest or do you tone down your opinions for fear of being criticised?

I express my “real” views here at mylot- Sometimes I might skip a discussion if it’s too “deep” and depending on my mood. I always give my real feelings and opinions though- If people want to disagree with me- It’s fine with me- I can’t imagine everyone agreeing with me all the time- How boring would that be. If I think what I write will get people to open up and comment – I think that is great too. Makes the site more fun! So yes I always tell it like I see it here at mylot!

Hmmm - interesting one. I guess the answer is, that try to be "myself" on Mylot, just the same as I would meeting someone in "real life", but, having said that, I do tend to steer clear of any discussions where I know my views will probably cause offence. This isn't so much for fear of being criticised - I haven't reached my age now being scared of a few hard words from anyone - but, at the same time, I know that some people here from different cultures or backgrounds to my own, may be offended by certain aspects of my lifesyle - the fact that I am an Atheist for example, so I tend to avoid religious discussions, and those talking about God, because I don't see the point of upsetting/offending people by saying I don't believe in Him. Cheers.

hi chuck, you've been busy today, everywhere I've been today on mylot you've made comments, that's impressive. Anyway back to this discussion you illustrate my point precisely because you try to avoid discussions that you feel your opinions/views may be difficult for others to accept, I know because I do the same thing. This is exactly what I'm getting at, sometimes it's difficult to be totally honest about a subject because others involved in that discussion topic may not be mature enough to respond respectfully to a different view point. Interestly enough I find your comments very balanced and yet as a Christian I share a completely different view point, because I do believe God exists. Like you however I like to be sensitive to others in how I express my beliefs, and just for the record I'm not trying to convert you to Christianity, promise. LOL and Great post

LOL! Well, it's a wet Bank Holiday Monday isn't it - no work, and too much rain to go out - so MyLot was the easiest option for some entertainment! Thanks for your nice comments by the way.

I think people are alot more honost and open online than they are in person. In person we are usually more worried about hurting someones feelings that we know and chose being polite over being truthful. I am not saying we should be curteous to each other online in fact we probly have to be more careful because behind every post there is a real person with feelings. But the truth is more prevalent online than it is in person.
