A friend of mine told me of a free program a while back that would scan your harddrive and remove all the useless stored data from it. For the life of me I can't remember the name, but would probably recognize it if I saw it again. Can anyone name some good free programs that can help me out? I really need to do something. My computer is running slower and slower. Thank you all in advance.

Well I reviewed all your responses. Before you download and install something on your Computer I would follow the steps you got in response #1. If that doesnt work then try add remove programs and remove all the software you dont need. then do the msconfig trick and uncheck all programs in the start up tab. you can always turn them back on. You might have a start up program that is causing your system to be slow.

If you find out the name, can you pass it on to me. I could use some cleaning too! Looks like we have the same problem.

Your computer could be running slower because of many factors. One of them is the reducing harddrive capacity. The other is the extra services running backend if you have recently installed some applications. It could also be some other hardware issues. The first thing I would do is to clear all internet temporary files and do not keep history of sites visited. This can be done through the internet browser itself. ccleaner is one software I used regularly.

Thanks hon. If it slows down again I will try ccleaner. I'm not sure that was the one I was originally looking for, but it sounds familiar.
