Stamp price goes up again!

United States

Yesterday I went to the post office to purchase a book of stamps. Well when I was there the post lady was nice enough to inform me that the price of stamps will be going up again on Monday, May 14. As of next week the stamp price will be 41 cents. So instead of getting a whole book. I just got the number of stamps I would need for this week. What was really surprising was I had not heard that the stamps would be going up until now. Normally I catch it on the news. But I haven't heard anything yet. It seems like they just raised the price not too long ago. Pretty soon at the rate the prices on everything is going we are not going to be able to afford to do anything. Has anyone else heard about the stamp price going up? Does anyone else fear a depression coming again? They say history repeats its self.

This is just unreal! It is no matter that people are going to email rather than conventional. I had heard that you can buy a Forever stamp that could be used at any time in the future....I don't know if it is still available, and dummy me, I didn't purchase them!

About a month ago, i had heard some scuttlebut about a stamp that you would buy now and it would be good forever...hence the name. Since I didn't really look into it much, I don't have any information on it right now...but we could probably get on the internet and find more info about it! I wish that I would have done more research then, I don't know if they are even available any more!

I found some info on the internet. Apparently, this is just a thought at this point. When the rates go up to 42 cents, they are considering offering a forever stamp...that would be good for any piece of mail in the future. I just posted a question about this!

41 cents, you say? It costs Canadians 52 cents to send a regular letter within Canada. It is something like 70c to the US. The price of stamps goes up here every January 1st. We don't even need to hear an announcement anymore, it's just a given. And now with the forever stamp it really doesn't make much of a difference until you purchase stamps and wonder why they cost more than they did the last time you bought them. I don't mail much anymore. I stopped sending Christmas cards out this past year because of the cost of stamps and my lack of funds. I realize a lot of people did the same because we didn't receive very many. Birthdays and anniversaries I can send e-cards to most people. But I have to mail photos and such to family members in other provinces who I don't see very often and don't have computers. The only thing I really need stamps for now is to submit writing to magazines and agents.

Oh, and one more thing - here in Canada we have to pay taxes on our postage. That's right. We pay a 6% Goods & Services Tax on everything other than food, plus 8% provincial sales tax in Ontario (but not on stamps).

Oh yea, I knew about for awhile.I don't know about your area but where I live,it's been talked about repeatedly on the news,on the radio ,and in the newspaper but I was surprised at the amount of people who didn't know about it.

While it is true throughout history that history does indeed repeat itself.....I sincerely hope that this is not necessarily what is happening....the increasing cost of fuel contributes in part to the rise in the cost of stamps again...our local post office notified us by placing a notice in our mailboxes a couple of weeks ago...so I was aware of the increase..... I rarely utilize the mail system anymore...most of bills are set up for automatic payments and I only have to record them when the receipt comes in the mail....plus I use online checking...so that also cuts down on the need for stamps in my case..... I do still send out birthday cards, Christmas cards, and things like that....but I use email mostly for communication with my friends and family....or the telephone.

Really, no I didn't know about it! That stinks, but luckily I dont have a book (i was going to buy one the other day, but didn't it must have been karma!). But still, I thought the price of a book was already expensive enough, I can't believe it's going to be more, wow!

Tell me about it. It doesn't seem much when you think of the price for a single stamp. 39 cents up to 41 cents. You think that is just 2 cents. But when you look at the price for a book of stamps. It just seems like a whole lot more. 7.80 up to 8.20.
