its probably good that you carry a pocket size dictionary with you so when you have a free time you can memorize the word, i think once you get use to english you won't forget the words anymore.

I think you should learn to be practical in usage. Most words we learn relate to things that occur everyday, e.g, squander = waste. You should make a sentence with them in your head, and if possible, link them to an activity or activities that you often partake in. I hope this helps.
