Have you ever had a house fire?

So, I was sitting here not sleeping when I should be and I hear a car in my driveway. There shouldn't be a car in my driveway at 4 a.m. and it is shining lights into my living room. It's graduation weekend in the college town I live in, so I was afraid it was some drunk. Instead, I went out to find the fire chief's SUV in my driveway. Apparently, there was a fire in one of the apartments next door. It was a small fire and no one was hurt, but it still had to be terribly upsetting to the person involved. In the four years I have lived in this house, this is the second time a neighbor has had a house fire. Two years ago, it was on a Sunday morning and the fire truck was parked in my driveway. The house across the street had a bad attic fire, but no one was hurt. The no injuries thing might have something to do with the fact that we are a block from the fire station. Anyway, I've never had a house fire, but I feel really bad for my neighbors. Have you ever had a house fire? Waht did you do?

I didn't have one, but last week I smelt burning wires in our walls at four am. We had to call the fire department. If the breaker didn't shut off, the house would have caught fire. That is as close to one as we got, and that was scarey and stressful enough. We had to gather our cats and rush them outside into the car, and the house was without air conditioning for 14 hours with desert heat at 112.

I can't imagine 14 hours of desert heat without air conditioning. My neighbor's fire wasn't really bad, but it made me think of all those important things...like getting my cat out of the house if there was a fire. Thankfully she comes when I call her, most of the time, and if she was scared she would definitely come running. Glad to hear that you and the kitties are okay.

Back right after I first moved to this area, I was renting an apt. that actually was right next to one that caught fire, and my apt had a lot of smoke damage. It was actually while I was out of town on vacation, so I was not there when it happened, but when I got back I ended up having to stay with my Mom until a new place was found. But not a Good memory or experience to remember for sure. No one was hurt in the incident, just people's places lost, and to find out later ours was Arson.
