What's your favorite TV theme song?

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm getting old, so be it, my fav is probably still the music from Hawaii 5-0. I can clearly remember my brother and I being impossibly young (barely zygotes, really!) and jumping around the living room imitating surfers while the theme played as loud as our Mom would let it! Too funny! Another more recent fav is NYPD Blue. That music is just so New York, all pounding, nearly dissonant drums layered with melodic purpose...love it! Also loved the music from West Wing, both opening and closing themes. Great stuff!

As, unfortunately, great tv does not always have universal availability, I'm going to choose 3 (1 for Asian readers, 1 for the UK, & 1 for the US). The manga series 'Paranoia Agent' has such a jolly tune, for it's opening theme, whilst a nuclear explosion occurs in the background. From the late 70s and early 80s, the Brit show 'Tales of the Unexpected' is a true classic. For my American friends, might I remind you of the greatness that once foretold another amazing story of everyday cowfolk, 'Bonanaza'! Yeeeha.

There was a rivalry at school between the Bonanza and High Chapparal fans. The Bonanaza theme tunes was just so full of life and fun that it really grabbed my interest, and set me up for a great episode. I always liked Hoss!

"Tales" shows up on late night tv in the States once in a while, excellent import! Bonanza is one of those defining icons of my childhood. At 7pm on Sunday evening, we entered the magical world of Walt Disney, followed by the earthy family drama with the Cartwrights... I wanted to marry Adam when I grew up, I was heartbroken when he left the show. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Ah, some good ones there. I think that the 70's were the best time for theme songs on tv. Some of the ones I like: All in The Family One Day at A Time Happy Days Laverne and Shirley MASH Hawaii 5-0 The Addams Family Gilligans Island The Munsters Welcome Back, Kotter I really don't know that I can pick a favorite out of those!!

Ah, and I forgot a few. I didn't really like the show, but I liked the theme for 'Maude'. And I also liked 'Good Times' and who could not mention the Brady Bunch?!

Oh, good one! been a Massive Attack fan since Peter Gabriel started working with them back in the 90's. Was thrilled to see them provide the theme for a hit show, they've done a good bit in movies, but not so much tv.

Ah "Hawaii 5-0" (Book 'em, Danno!), theme song was by the Ventures if I recall correctly. Also from that time period, I liked the theme from "Mission Impossible", by Lalo Schifrin, It was done in 5/4 time, making it very unique. Others I have enjoyed: West Wing & Hill Street Blues. On a lighter note, there was Gilligan's Island (...the professor and, Mary Ann...).

Thanks for that bit of trivia, I didn't know that. Yes, Hill St. Blues was a good one, and how could I forget MI? I like the theme from Friends, too, but I liked that one before it was a tv theme song!

I really love the theme song for "Sanford and Son". It is by Quincy Jones but I don't remember the name. It is a really cool jam.
