What do you do with clothing you no longer want or need?

Jeans - Would you chuck these out?

Do you give it to good will or put it in the trash? Most of my everyday clothes get worn till they are rags...I have t-shirts over 15 years old that I wear. Clothes that no longer fit me that I really like are hanging in the closet in the spare room...one day....they'll fit me again (yeah, right!). Other stuff that's still wearable I give to a charity. Do you follow fashion, religously or otherwise and not wear clothes that are no longer fashionable? I wear classic styles and things that suit me and look good, fashionable or not. I've often wondered what celebrities do with their clothing cos you rarely see them wearing the same thing twice.

I give all my old clothes to charity. We have plenty of charity shops around here, plus we have regular doorstep collections of old clothes, which are then bagged up, and sent to the Third World, and some of the poorer parts of Eastern Europe. As for celebrities, well I obviously can't speak for all of them, but I live in London, and I know many celebrities based here give their clothes to charity shops too. I am quite wasteful with clothes I have to admit! I do have some really old stuff, but equally I have stuff that I've worn once and then decided I didn't like - or sometimes never worn at all - LOL! So I end up giving quite a lot of stuff away!

I wear whatever I think looks good; whether or not it's part of the latest trends, I really couldn't care less. Clothes that I've worn out or am just not interested in anymore, I give away to charity. Otherwise, clothes in good condition that I don't enjoy wearing anymore, I sell online or to thrift shops.

Fortunately around here their are clothing collections bins set up where people can make use of them... I regularly collect used clothing from my clients and donate it to charities and thrift shops and since I like classy (Black) clothing for myself, almost any colorful clothing that comes my way gets donated, or street "traded" to someone who wants it... It can be somewhat humourous to see someone walking down the street wearing an old rock and roll T-Shirt that I used to own! :)

I saw a lady wearing something I'd made for my Mum. (Mum passed away and this lady was a friend of hers. That was a bit of a shock actually. It looked lovely on her.

I give anything I don't wear or does not fit and is good to goodwill or we have a homeless shelter who is happy to takes things we no longer need or want. I wear what is comfortable and fits good, really don't care who makes it,walmart or Macy's ..lol my dress of choice is usually jeans and sweatshirt when cold and shorts and t-shirts when warm..and if I have to dress up,I do own a dress, but never heels, they hurt, hurt, and I want my feet comfortable too...and the saying is ...about the unworn in your closet, if you haven't worn it in two years you never will :)

I have younger cousins who can't really afford buying clothes on a regular basis. I just give it to them especially the clothes that are still in good condition but doesn't fit me anymore. The old dirty ones are used as rags at home. In our school, we also have outreach programs every december that's why everyone in the house gives their old clothes too.

As I had lost a lot of weight (189 lbs to 131 lbs, size 2x to 10) nothing fitted me after I cam back from a 4 month hospital/rehab stay. I gave all my clothes to the nursing home where I was a patient and now volunteer at.

I try to find some one that I know might use them. If I don't, then I give them to one of the local thrift store that are like the Goodwill only they help in our local community with food banks and assistance for the needy. I can not see throwing it away when there is someone out there that can use it!

I generally tend to have a clearout of my clothes every three months or so. I have 3 piles, the "keep" pile which go back into the wardrobe. The "eBay" pile which is usually good quality clothing that no longer fits or doesn't suit me and the "charity shop" pile which is generally clothing which I feel probably isn't top quality but can be donated to the charity shop.

So many great responses. If we could pick all the best ones, you'd get one as well. Good idea with the piles.

i keep my old shirts in my wardrobe i follow the fashion, but i'm very picky in selecting the stuffs i bought i never buy a shirt or t-shirt that is too uptodate with the trend, so i can keep it for a long time i only buy basic shape shirts or t-shirts i once watched a talk show with some of the wealthiest female celebs in my country, they throw their old-fashioned outfit easily either they gave it to their servant ?!?! or they just gave it for charity.. ^^

I used to work for one of those charities and the workers, volunteers all got the pick of any goods or clothing being donated. What a good lurk that would be these days with ebay being so popular.

LOL have you been in my closet? I'm like you, have clothes that I've had for years and years - I certainly don't keep up with fashion, unless it happens to come back in style. I have over the years donated clothes that are in good condition to charities such as Goodwill in our area... I also shop at Goodwill occasionally. You can find some great bargins such as the nearly new blazer I got last year for $2.50. Goodwill hires the handicapped or disabled and the money from sales go towards upkeep on the stores and the salaries.

Some of our goodwill stores also hire handicapped and disabled people. Mostly though they are run by elderly women, with the older men picking up items of furniture and electrical items.

Sometimes, if the clothes still fits me, I keep them. Sometimes I reinvent them. When my things does not fit me after long time usage, I give them to others, relatives who is younger than me. Its better to give than to just put it to trash right? so there it is. ;)

when i have clothing which i no longer want or need, i either put it away to give to my younger cousins for hand-me-downs and if they find no liking in it, i give it to good will. i dont keep clothes for a long time because my principle is if i dont wear some clothes for almost a year, its time to give them away and buy new ones. :)

I usually put them in the clothes drop box that they have stationed all around the place. I am going to start taking them to the Goodwill.

I list my old or unwanted clothes on Ebay - if they're still decent of course! I don't usually wear my clothes until they're worn out unless it's a particular favourite of course so they're normally in pretty good condition. As to fashion I like to change my look a lot anyway although if I'm going to spend a lot of money on something I'll usually opt for something more classic that won't date. I go through phases with clothes. Sometimes I live in jeans, other times I like to dress up more. If I liked something I wouldn't get rid of it just because it wasn't fashionable anymore.

I sell mine to Plato's closet. They buy and sell gently used clothing. The money is great to have, and the prices are great when you want to buy new(er) clothes! I also like to donate my clothes for the people that are in need of them.

I usually give mine away when they no longer fit me. I just buy and wear what looks good on me. I'm still trying to lose some more pounds from having my son so I usually buy my clothes at a thrift store so at least I don't have to pay a lot of money for them. And I'll go to Kohl's and Goody's and places like that and buy clothes when they are having sales. I don't ever throw clothes away unless they have lots of holes in them. T-shirts we just make into rags for cleaning the car and stuff like that.

I use my cloths to the maximum of five years. After that i will donate them to the orphanage. I use to wear all kinds of dresses, whether they are currently in fashion or not.

usually i'll give it to the orphanage. of course, i'll have to make sure that the clothes i'm giving away is in good condition and useable, if not i'll just throw it away or use it as a rag hehe :P ..sometimes i wish that i could sell off those clothes, but i don't know where and not sure if ppl wanna buy used clothes? because i personally don't buy used clothes hehe..oh well. .
