Recently I have heard a lot of people say that there should not be a recess time in elementary school. They say that the kids pick up bad habits, they are bullied and they risk physical injury because it is so rough out in the schoolyard. I however feel that this is an important break for the kids and this unstructured time lets them develop socially with others without an adult always watching over their shoulder. This is a skill they will need later in life. What do you think? Whould there be recess in elementary school, or is it a dangerous waste of time? cheers

It all depends on school, but I am shocked about fighting in elementary school. That's bad. I think school have the right to keep the compound safe for all students.

If this proposal is for the good of the children, then I am all for it. Schools and parents know better. If some schools find that recess time is "crime time" for kids coming in with blood in their noses or a cut on the knees or head, then by all means, cut this period. If the problem does not exist, then schools can retain the old system. Schools should have the discretion to continue having it or removing it if it leads to injuries and other forms of bullying.

Yeah I think there should be recess in school. Because for one thing kids nead a break time and its hard for a lot of kids to go through out the day to go without eatting. Plus they need something to look forward something other then going home through out the day. Plus it helps them get reengergized since a lot of people dont eat brekfest during the day.

I'm sorry but I think the idea of banning recess is ridiculous. We had recess when we were kids and we all came out fine. It is the job of the school to keep control of the playground during recess time, and if there is a bully problem to nip it in the bud. Banning recess does not get to the core of a bully problem, it just makes it easier on the school. We pay taxes for our children to attend safe schools and become well-rounded citizens. It is the schools job to take those fund and make the best ue of them. And bullies need to be dealt with. If one is found, they need to be removed from the school system. But children also need to be allowed to defend themselves in a bully situation.
